Overview

Hollaia is inspired by the great Sangiovese dominant blends of Italy that flew against the face of their appellation system by introducing non-indigenous

varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon to be blended with the traditional Sangiovese, and became known as Super-Tuscans.

A wine of intrigue and generosity displaying both sweet fruit and the more savoury flavours typical of Sangiovese. Bright cherry and boysenberry, with olive, rosemary and tobacco leaf supported by precisely fashioned chalky tannins.

Expert Reviews

An interesting 50/50 blend, sangiovese sour cherry aromas leading the bouquet, cabernet filling the palate, then both combining to provide the savoury tannins on the finish.Drink to 2014. Rating 90 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion Edition 2010

The 2006 Hollaia drinks well on release, but the ample tannin structure and exquisite balance ensures that time in a good cellar will be rewarded.

The wine is a natural to partner with Italian influenced fare. Try with a barbequed Italian sausage and bean salad for a great lunch or any pasta sauce containing tomatoes.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

The Hollick winery, cellar door and restaurant complex is established on "Neilson's Block", one of the original John Riddoch Coonawarra selections in the cool South East corner of South Australia.

Driven by quality and a hands-on approach, Hollick wines are made from three core vineyards. Neilson's Block, planted by Ian and Wendy in 1975, the nearby Wilgha vineyard, purchased in 1987 and the Red Ridge vineyard developed in 1998 at Wrattonbully, giving Hollick over 200 acres of vineyard in total. Eighty percent is planted to red varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese and Petit Verdot. The balance of the vineyards are planted to the white varieties of Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

A historic cottage, which was restored by Ian and Wendy in 1983 is a feature of the entrance to the winery. Heritage listed and built in 1860, it was the birthplace of famous lyric poet John Shaw Neilson and was the original cellar door.
