Overview

When I came across this vineyard it was in really bad condition. I knew it had great potential because technically it had all the things I had been looking for. Even though; ravaged by kangaroos, rabbits and without any water, in its first year - I produced a wonderful wine. There is a powerful minerality that runs through this wine, perhaps due to the fact it is the highest altitude vineyard on the Western side of the Barossa at approximately 340-380m.

The soils include deep red clays and large ironstone rocks (Brunette in colour). This vineyard even attains a level of lignification in the stems allowing for partial whole bunch fermentation. The alcohol is always at around 13.5% and these unique characters allow me the opportunity to take this wine to a level comparable with the great Syrah wines of the world. Alex Head, Winemaker

Expert Reviews

Alex Head has pulled a rabbit from the hat with the depth of colour to this wine, and a second rabbit with the fully ripe and generous fruit, bordering on sweet, with layers of satsuma plum and blackberry; judicious use of oak has added the final dimension. One of the best Barossa Valley shirazs from '11. Rating 95 - Drink by 2025, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (AUG/2012).

Winery Profile

Very much a rising star, Alex Head has taken the long path to wine-making, starting with a degree in Biochemistry at Sydney University, then stints in fine wine retail, wholesale importers and auction houses. He followed this with vintage at a handful of superb Australian wineries including Torbreck and Tyrrells, before heading out on his own, with his first releases in 2008.

Already rated a 5-star producer by James Halliday and named one of his Top Ten Best New Wineries for 2011, Alex's wines are inspired by the wines of France's Cote Rotie, in particular, and are produced in quantities of at most one or two barrels.
