The Gaia Vineyard is named after James Lovelock’s original book (Gaia: A New Look at Life on Earth). Lovelock proposed the Gaia Hypothesis, now Gaia Theory, that the Earth is a single organism, reliant on the complexity and diversity of its species to maintain ecological health.

An elegant, savoury blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, the vineyard's altitude imparts a uniqueness to this wine. Powerful, with concentrated blackcurrant and briary fruits, tight structure, with firm underlying tannin and impressive balance and length.

Only 900 dozen produced.

Winery Tasting Notes

Winemaking Note

This is an outstanding vintage of the single vineyard, small volume Grosset cabernet blend. It has been farmed by Grosset without chemicals to encourage vineyard health and is pruned, trained and harvested by hand. In 2009, the ‘Gaia’ is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (75%) and Cabernet Franc (25%) matured in French barriques, fifty percent of which are new, then bottled and allowed to settle for a twelve months before release. As with every Grosset release, this wine is defined by its innate structural tannin and has not been fined.

The 2009 ‘Gaia’ is characterised by a plushness and purity of fruit that will delight followers of the style. The aromatics are evocative of the rugged, stoney site on which the grapes are grown: brooding, briary and mineral.

There is complexity, detail and finesse to accompany pristine blackcurrant essence. The palate is seamless, the texture sumptuous, fleshy and velvety. Certainly, there’s tightness of structure, weight and density of flavour, before a schisty minerally note and tight, ripe tannins herald a lingering finish.

Cellaring Potential

It is an elegant, well-structured Cabernet that is more approachable than most vintages of Gaia – not dissimilar to the 2008. Many will enjoy it over the next five years when it may well be at its best. If well-cellared, it has the capacity to last for at least 15 years.
