Overview

The growing season was mild, after good winter rains, and timely rains during the growing season. Our Riesling comes from young Geisenheim clone vines, with a dripper for stress relief, and 40 year old dry grown vines. Yields were low, and small berries yielded flavour packed juice. This shows in the wine, which is really an expression of the grape flavours.

Winery Tasting Notes

Aroma/Palate

In this wine it is very obvious. Lemon, lime and delicate floral characters. Typical of a very good vintage in Watervale.

Made by Nick Walker and David O’Leary.

Cellaring

Similar in style to the magnificent 1997. Lovely now, assured of a long future.

Winery Profile

Fireblock (formerly Old Station Vineyard) is owned by Bill and Noel Ireland, who purchased the almost-70-year-old Watervale vineyard in 1995. The vines planted in 1926 (3ha of shiraz and 2ha of grenache) are dry-grown, the riesling (1ha) was replanted to the Geisenheim clone in 2008 when town water became available. Watervale Riesling, Old Vine Shiraz and Old Vine Grenache are skilfully contract-made, winning trophies and gold medals at capital city wine shows
