The Escarpment “Insight Series” allows individual vineyard expression from exceptional sites within the Martinborough Geographic Indication. This wine was grown on the McCreanor Vineyard Princess Street, Martinborough from 29 year old vines. A combination of slightly heavier soils and a single clone, 10/5 on own roots, always rewards us with this particular style; soft, ripe, pure fruit expressions in an exceedingly New World Pinot Noir.

Expert Reviews

Medium ruby in color, the 2010 Pahi Pinot Noir offers a nice aromatic core of mulberries, raspberries and red cherries with floral notes and earthy undertones of dried herbs / stems, bark, pepper and meat. Medium-bodied with a good concentration of layered flavors and medium levels of grainy tannins, it has a long and earthy finish. It should drink well 2013 to 2018+. Rating 92+, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, (OCT/2012)

Winery Tasting Notes

It was open topped fermented in traditional wooden cuvees, hand plunged every 12 hours, with a total vat time of 15 days. After pressing it was matured in 30% new French oak barriques for 12 months. It was fined using a minimum of egg whites to protect the flavours but aid brightness in the glass without filtering, promoting soft mouth feel and texture.

Food Matching

It will continue to develop for up to 10 years and will always be a wonderful counterpart to any game food.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

In 1999, Robert and Mem Kirby and Larry and Sue McKenna met for the first time, and quickly realized they shared a great passion for Pinot Noir, and the project to develop Escarpment Vineyard began. Collectively all four directors bring to Escarpment a world of experience, skill and understanding to the nurturing and making of fine, deliciously sublime wine.

In the search for the perfect vineyard site, Larry and Sue kept coming back to the Martinborough area, an area they knew intimately and which they were convinced offered the rich mix of elements required to grow and make fine New World wines, in particular Pinot Noir.

Escarpment Vineyard is planted on alluvial gravel terraces at the base of the Aorangi Ranges, the very hills made famous by the legendary Polynesian voyager who, according to Maori legend, discovered New Zealand. Kupe left his three canoes, Nga Waka, on top of the range, giving rise to the now familiarlandmark of the district, the three flat-topped hills on top of the range, which resemble unturned canoes. This warrior and his story provide inspiration for Escarpment Vineyard’s distinctive brand and logo, and for Larry and his winemaking team.
