Overview

This is the 6th vintage of the Premium range of Rieslings, and only the 4th commercial release of a terroir wine from Helm Wines and neighbour Al Lustenberger’s vineyard. Only perfect specially selected fruit is used to create the Premium Riesling, and the wine is only released under the Premium black label if it reaches a quality benchmark. Since 2005 they have collected 14 trophies at regional and capital city wine shows.

The Lustenberger vineyard is at 650 metres, north facing and row orientation east west with vertical shoot canopy management, designed for maximum protection of the fruit against sunburn – a main cause of the kero taint.

Expert Reviews

“This is undoubtedly one of Australia’s premium Rieslings and has an impressive track record. This 2010 is right up there with the best of them, making a striking pure and intense impression of fine lime peel, lemon juice, steely minerals, sweet jasmine florals and spicy fragrance . The palate’s impressive cut, with scintillatingly pure acid and flawless clarity. Finishes with diamond- like sparkle”.Rating 96 - Nick Stock Good Wine Guide 2011 Nick Stock Nov 2010.

Fresh lifted floral nose, soft acid and a ferric minerality, reflecting the iron content of the soils. Persistent fruit with elegant structure, showing all the classic flavours of the variety.

An extremely versatile wine that will complement many foods from delicate seafood, salads and fresh pasta dishes to salted meats, chicken and rich game birds such as duck or turkey.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Helm Wines was established in 1973 and was one of the first commercial wineries in the Canberra District Wine Region. Located just outside of Murrumbateman, approximately 30 km north of Canberra, the winery was given a 5 star rating in James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion 2012. Ken and Judith Helm started the vineyard, winery and cellar door and it continues to be a family affair with all of the family playing an integral part in the business. The winemakers are Ken and daughter Stephanie, who are fourth and fifth generation descendants of German vinedressers from the Rhineland, who established vineyards near Albury and Rutherglen in the 1860s.

The winery uses a combination of modern and traditional equipment and adopts a minimalist approach to winemaking, so that what you get in the bottle is as close as possible to what came out of the vine. We strive to produce premium quality wines that reflect the true characteristics of the grape and the land or 'terroir' in which they have been grown. The cool climate wine country near Canberra allows Helm Wines to produce unique styles of wines that you won't find anywhere else in the world.

Helm Wines tasting room is the 1888 Toual Public School House which is listed by the National Trust and was the inspiration for the school bell featured on our label. It was once used for meetings of the Temperance League, where locals signed the pledge against alcohol.
