2013 Vintage was a standout year for Riesling. Picking started in late February in perfect conditions with cool nights and dry warm days. The weather conditions meant very low disease pressures, great sugar and acid balance, low PH and complex fruit flavours.

Expert Reviews

"Ken Helm's Classic Dry won a gold medal at the regional wine show in September. Three months on, it's probably even fruiter and lovelier than what the judges tasted - a transformation Canberra's riesling seem to undergo during late spring and early summer. The wine is highly aromatic, showing both floral and citrus character. These flavours come through on the delicate but intense, bone-dry palate. Its delicacy, flavour intensity and dryness make Helm Classic an exceptional aperitif style for Christmas and New Year. Put six bottles aside, though, and enjoy its evolution over the next decade or so." Chris Shanahan, The Canberra Times, Dec 18 2013

Winery Tasting Notes

Striking floral bouquet reminiscent of apple blossom.

Clean and fresh, green apples and lime, perfectly balanced acid and a crisp finish. An exquisite Riesling.

Food Matching

Like all of our Rieslings, this wine can be paired with numerous dishes. The tangy lemon and lime flavours especially complement creamy pasta and chicken dishes and all kinds of seafood.

Built to last, the wine can be enjoyed now while it is young and crisp, or cellared for up to 10 years which will allow its mellow and toasty honeyed flavours to develop.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Helm Wines was established in 1973 and was one of the first commercial wineries in the Canberra District Wine Region. Located just outside of Murrumbateman, approximately 30 km north of Canberra, the winery was given a 5 star rating in James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion 2012. Ken and Judith Helm started the vineyard, winery and cellar door and it continues to be a family affair with all of the family playing an integral part in the business. The winemakers are Ken and daughter Stephanie, who are fourth and fifth generation descendants of German vinedressers from the Rhineland, who established vineyards near Albury and Rutherglen in the 1860s.

The winery uses a combination of modern and traditional equipment and adopts a minimalist approach to winemaking, so that what you get in the bottle is as close as possible to what came out of the vine. We strive to produce premium quality wines that reflect the true characteristics of the grape and the land or 'terroir' in which they have been grown. The cool climate wine country near Canberra allows Helm Wines to produce unique styles of wines that you won't find anywhere else in the world.

Helm Wines tasting room is the 1888 Toual Public School House which is listed by the National Trust and was the inspiration for the school bell featured on our label. It was once used for meetings of the Temperance League, where locals signed the pledge against alcohol.
