The 2011 vintage in the Canberra District and for many Australian Wine regions was marred with a lot of rain and disease problems. Fortunately, Helm Wines managed to avoid the mildew, with careful timing of traditional sprays, and after 7 years of drought, the soil soaking rains were welcomed by the vines. Rieslings and Cabernet sauvignon thrived in the conditions and some seriously great wines are the result.

Our Premium vineyard (grown by Al Lustenberger) was declassified this vintage due to low yields, as 6 tonnes is required for a commercial release. So the grapes from all Helm vineyards, including Lustenberger's, went into the Riesling Classic Dry 2011 which has produced an exciting wine.

Vintage started about 7 to 10 days later than the last decade of warm to hot years. The fruit displayed beautiful flavours and excellent acid sugar balance.

Expert Reviews

Pale quartz; the bouquet is as yet restrained, albeit with some citrus and apple blossom, the palate another thing altogether, with an admirable racy/zesty edge carrying the wine through to its long finish and aftertaste. Will develop very well, my points are based on my certainty this will happen.

Rating 94 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (AUG/2011)

Winery Tasting Notes

Greenish yellow.

Lifted fresh floral bouquet, clean fruit flavoured palate, showing good length and balanced acid.

Food Matching

Like all of our Rieslings, this wine can be paired with numerous dishes. The youthful acidity in this wine means it will especially complement savoury dishes accompanied with sweet sauces and all kinds of seafood.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Helm Wines was established in 1973 and was one of the first commercial wineries in the Canberra District Wine Region. Located just outside of Murrumbateman, approximately 30 km north of Canberra, the winery was given a 5 star rating in James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion 2012. Ken and Judith Helm started the vineyard, winery and cellar door and it continues to be a family affair with all of the family playing an integral part in the business. The winemakers are Ken and daughter Stephanie, who are fourth and fifth generation descendants of German vinedressers from the Rhineland, who established vineyards near Albury and Rutherglen in the 1860s.

The winery uses a combination of modern and traditional equipment and adopts a minimalist approach to winemaking, so that what you get in the bottle is as close as possible to what came out of the vine. We strive to produce premium quality wines that reflect the true characteristics of the grape and the land or 'terroir' in which they have been grown. The cool climate wine country near Canberra allows Helm Wines to produce unique styles of wines that you won't find anywhere else in the world.

Helm Wines tasting room is the 1888 Toual Public School House which is listed by the National Trust and was the inspiration for the school bell featured on our label. It was once used for meetings of the Temperance League, where locals signed the pledge against alcohol.
