This wine shows delicate green gold hues with a bouquet of fresh limes and honey. The palate has a classic lime juice backbone and is refreshingly dry, finishing with great acidity. Simply magnificent Eden Valley Riesling.

Expert Reviews

Twice in a row is not a bad achievement for the 2005 Wigan Eden Valley Riesling but then those lucky enough to have come across this wine before will not be surprised by its runaway success. Wigan is Peter Lehmann’s best and most delicate Eden Valley Riesling of the vintage.....the 2005 Wigan is remarkably fresh, retaining that steely, classic, Eden Valley finish that brings longevity... ‘They commence life as wines of great purity and end up as wines of great complexity’, says Andrew Wigan. The grapes come from 11 growers in the area with different vineyards used according to the season. Peter Lehmann’s Reserve Riesling was first made in 1987 and renamed Wigan in recognition of chief winemaker Andrew Wigan’s effective lifelong commitment to the company.Regional Trophy, Australian Riesling, Decanter (MAY/2011)

I was lucky enough to pour 2004 Wigan Riesling on a number of occasions on my 100 Best Roadshow last year and it didn't

fail to entrance every single person that it touched, confirming that dry Aussie Riesling, with a few years under its belt, is every bit as compelling as the great wines of Alsace. '05 Wigs is even

more aromatic and captivating so this message will continue togather momentum everywhere I go.Matthew Jukes, 100 Best Australian Wines 2011

Winery Tasting Notes

A bright lemon with green tinges.

This multiple medal winner has the classical Eden Valley lime bouquet and is showing the first hints of toastiness, the result of time in the bottle.

The palate is still remarkably youthful with fresh racy acidity and a honeyed deepening on the middle palate. Eden Valley Riesling at its finest.

Food Matching

A perfect aperitif. Also a superb accompaniment to oysters, shellfish, and grilled white fish.

Cellaring Potential

Thanks to the screwcap closure, the wine will gain complexity with further careful cellaring.

Wine Background

Named the Wigan, after PLW’s Chief Winemaker Andrew Wigan, who has been involved in the making of every Riesling bottled under the Peter Lehmann label since the beginning, the Wigan Riesling is a testament to his success with Riesling within Australia and on the International Wine Show circuits.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

In the face of a serious overproduction of grapes and the real possibility of growers facing financial ruin, Peter Lehmann found some investment partners, established a consortium and built the Peter Lehmann Wines winery. It was 1979.The first vintage was processed in 1980 and in 1982 the winery was formally named Peter Lehmann Wines. From then on, its wines have been marketed under the Peter Lehmann Wines label.

As an experienced winemaker, Peter Lehmann was all too aware of the challenges facing a young winery in a competitive market. Growth was well planned, slow and steady.

Initially, the winery facility was built to process fruit purchased from the local growers. Carefully and strategically, the Peter Lehmann Wines operation moved on from the bulk wine market to become a producer of premium bottled wines with a well-deserved international reputation.

As well as purchasing grapes from about 185 local independent growers, Peter Lehmann Wines has its own vineyards, which produce about 2% of its requirements. The famous Barossa wine region is a little over an hour by car north of Adelaide, South Australia’s capital. The Barossa comprises two regions, the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley, and these regions encompass a myriad of sub-districts.

The care and consideration which Peter Lehmann Wines brings to the selection of grapes enable the winery to produce a wide range of distinctive, award-winning and internationally acclaimed wines.

Our wines are created from grapes purchased from about 165 carefully selected independent growers as well as grapes grown in the four company-owned vineyards. Many of our growers’ families have worked the same vineyards for five and, in some cases, six generations. These Barossa vignerons tend to around 900 individual vineyards that run the gamut of the Barossa, through Lyndoch, Vine Vale, Light Pass, Stonewell, Greenock, Ebenezer and the Eden Valley.
