Expert Reviews

Deep crimson-purple, remarkable for age, although it was a great vintage; the transition from American to French oak has added lustre to the bouquet and medium-bodied palate; the dark fruits and bitter chocolate flavours are intense and long, with a matrix of juicy and savoury characters to play with.Drink By 2031: Rating 96 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (MAR/2011)

Stonewell is the finest Barossa shiraz of the modern era. A monumental call, but no other comes close in its consistency across more than two decades, its core of profound longevity and the ever-escalating grandeur of its finest vintages. 2006 is a maelstrom of concentrated power and uncompromising composure like none that has gone before it. Screw cap for the first time! Drink 2021-2031. 97 points - Tyson Stelzer, Wine Taste (AUG/2011)

Stonewell directly sings of the season and it clearly resonates with the intricacies of the harvest and its own source material. This is a sensationally well-balanced wine with clarity of message and freshness on its not inconsiderable finish. As you all know, I described the 2004 vintage of this wine as perfect. It looks even better today! But this 2006 is only half a pace behind its bigger brother. This is a great Stronewell and its one which won't scare the uninitiated, too, and we don't want to do that do we? Matthew Jukes, 100 Best Australian Wines 2001

Winery Tasting Notes

The colour is deep red-black.

A bouquet shows hints of chocolate and dark plums.

These flavours extend to the palate which is richly structured with a fine, persistent finish - a wine of great style and power.

Food Matching

Savour with rich game dishes, roast beef, and hard cheese such as Parmigiano Reggiano, aged cheddar or Grana Padana.

Wine Background

The story of Stonewell Shiraz began in 1987 when Peter Lehmann decided to make a special Shiraz - a wine of immense intensity and muscularity that would demand time in the barrel and bottle before release. The wine was named ‘Stonewell’ after the district that he believed best showed the characters admired most in Barossa Shiraz.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

In the face of a serious overproduction of grapes and the real possibility of growers facing financial ruin, Peter Lehmann found some investment partners, established a consortium and built the Peter Lehmann Wines winery. It was 1979.The first vintage was processed in 1980 and in 1982 the winery was formally named Peter Lehmann Wines. From then on, its wines have been marketed under the Peter Lehmann Wines label.

As an experienced winemaker, Peter Lehmann was all too aware of the challenges facing a young winery in a competitive market. Growth was well planned, slow and steady.

Initially, the winery facility was built to process fruit purchased from the local growers. Carefully and strategically, the Peter Lehmann Wines operation moved on from the bulk wine market to become a producer of premium bottled wines with a well-deserved international reputation.

As well as purchasing grapes from about 185 local independent growers, Peter Lehmann Wines has its own vineyards, which produce about 2% of its requirements. The famous Barossa wine region is a little over an hour by car north of Adelaide, South Australia’s capital. The Barossa comprises two regions, the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley, and these regions encompass a myriad of sub-districts.

The care and consideration which Peter Lehmann Wines brings to the selection of grapes enable the winery to produce a wide range of distinctive, award-winning and internationally acclaimed wines.

Our wines are created from grapes purchased from about 165 carefully selected independent growers as well as grapes grown in the four company-owned vineyards. Many of our growers’ families have worked the same vineyards for five and, in some cases, six generations. These Barossa vignerons tend to around 900 individual vineyards that run the gamut of the Barossa, through Lyndoch, Vine Vale, Light Pass, Stonewell, Greenock, Ebenezer and the Eden Valley.
