Expert Reviews

Good mousse; sets the pace at this price, with good stone fruit flavours; a dry finish does not shorten the finish.Rating 87 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion Edition 2011

Winery Tasting Notes

Pale straw with a fine bead and a nice rim of foam.

It’s all about delicacy and complexity with this style. I see notes of aged pear, custard apple, Camembert, warm apple pie and others, each one playing just a small part but also combining with force.

Generous in the mid palate and crisp and clean on the finish, this wine is a creamy-rich ball of fruit, which kind-of melts slowly away.

Cellaring Potential

Best enjoyed young.

Winemaking Notes

Classic varieties, early picking, gentle processing of exclusively free run juice, good attention to juice composition and clarity, cold and slow fermentation with classic sparkling wine yeast and then extended yeast lees aging – these were the hallmarks of our base wine production. Delicacy and freshness resulted. The different varietal parcels were blended and a ‘reserve’ volume included for depth and complexity. Then a second fermentation was initiated to naturally charge the wine with it fizz and to bring everything into harmony.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

The Mildura region was established as an agricultural settlement in the 1880s after Alfred Deakin, a former Prime Minister of Australia, encouraged California’s Chaffey Brothers to bring their irrigation expertise to Mildura. The region subsequently became one of the most productive agricultural areas in Australia specialising in citrus, olives, almonds and grapes.

The Deakin Estate range and the premium Alfred range were named in honour of this visionary, Alfred Deakin.

The Deakin Estate property was purchased in 1967 when vineyards were planted. Initially, the grapes grown were picked and sold as fruit. Wine production on the property did not begin until 1980 when a winery facility was built. Fruit quality and wine production improved and in 1994 Deakin Estate the brand was launched in the United Kingdom. A domestic launch followed with the release of the next vintage.

Deakin Estate vineyard is located at Red Cliffs, near Mildura in the North-West of Victoria. The region has become one of the most productive agricultural areas in Australia.

There are 350 hectares under vine in the Deakin Estate vineyard. Main varieties include Colombard, Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot.
