Generous, rich flavours ooze from this big, concentrated Shiraz. It has warm rustic charm, great length and a complex fruit, oak and tannin structure. Vintage 2014 was our first year making wine from this vineyard and we’re delighted with the results. This Shiraz has fruit intensity with sophisticated oak maturation adding elegance and refinement.

Winery Tasting Notes

The appearance is deep inky red to black with violet hues around the rim reflecting its youth with thick alcohol legs on the glass.

The bouquet jumps out of the glass with lovely new American oak caressing blackberry, plums and dark cherry fruit. The aroma is sweet and rich with earthy spices delivering complexity and sophistication.

The palate opens with a burst of ripe blackberry and quickly cascades to reveal clean new oak, earthy herbs, licorice and leather. The alcohol lift gives warmth on the middle and the bold tannins are softening to give a rich unctuous mouth feel that flows through to the finish. This is a grand wine showing lovely maturity while retaining intensity, depth and longevity.

Food Matching

A complex Shiraz like this is an experience on its own. It will be at home with the finest of cuisine or simply pour a generous serve into a large, wide bowled glass, allow it to breathe for a few minutes then indulge in the intoxicating sensation of bouquet and flavour of premium Barossa Valley Shiraz from the banks of the North Para River, the life of the valley.

Cellaring Potential

This is a big wine which will develop slowly over the next 10 - 12 years. Bottled with screw cap it will retain integrity and condition and provide rewarding drinking whenever it’s opened.

Winery Profile

As youthful enthusiasts, it was our basic love of wine and thirst for knowledge that independently led us to study at the hallowed halls of South Australia’s famed Roseworthy College … That was several decades ago and whilst we’ve taken different paths and achieved different outcomes, we’ve both decided it’s time to get back to the basics that inspired us so long ago.

Together, we’ve clocked up more than 60 years working in various segments of the wine business. We’ve seen the industry mature and fashions come and go. A lot has happened since Paul Hogan started “tossing shrimps on the Barbie” but sharing some good food and nice wine with friends remains one of our constant pleasures.

As an international marketer, educator and recipient of Champagne’s highest honour “Chevalier l’Ordre des Coteaux de Champagne”, Jan Douglas is no stranger to the world of fine wine, dining and travel. I started winemaking in the Barossa back in the 1980’s with traditional varieties and techniques. Combining the years of experience and knowledge with some old school values lead us to develop the Douglas Hughes “Series” range of wines. They’re full flavoured, honest wines that invoke a slice of the past and are perfect for enjoying today.

Whilst it’s no longer acceptable or legitimate to refer to Australian wines using European terms like Burgundy, Claret, Moselle, Chablis or Port, if you ever fell in love with any of the fabulous Barossa “White Burgundies” or a full bodied “Hermitage”, our Series 163 Chardonnay or Series 101 Shiraz might rekindle that affair.
