Delamotte Brut is a blend of approximately 55% chardonnay, 35% pinot noir & 10% pinot meunier, which combine to give a wine of subtle power, appealing freshness, soft curves and a precise, fresh fruit finish : this is a dry and extremely attractive champagne, balanced and elegant. Each grape plays its fundamental role, as Chardonnay sets the wine in place, its foundation and roots, a small portion of Pinot Noir helps give the wine more width and fruit and a smaller portion of Pinot Meunier, a less acidic grape brings its aromatic charm to produce a brut that does not rely on reserve wines for character but finds personality at its roots. Aged on the lees for 30 to 36 months, Delamotte brut receives a light dosage of sugar, a similar dosage to the rest of the Delamotte range.
A simple NV but clean and balanced, in a particularly biscuity, bready style with flavours of ginger nut biscuits. A gram less dosage than last year balances its preserved citrus fruit nicely. Hints of candied musk sticks give an impression of sweetness (but it’s not), closing with vibrant lemon fruit. Rating 91 - Tyson Stelzer, Champagne Guide 2012 - 2013
Colour
Pale gold in colour.
Aroma
It has great purity on the nose, laced with citrus, white blossom, lemon zest and mossy notes.
Palate
Its creamy freshness is further emphasised by the textural delicacy of its mousse. There are any number of possible pretexts to drink a wine like this - a generous champagne, clean and elegant, this is a champagne built for tenderness and pleasure, an absolute must for the cellar of all those who celebrate life.
Serving Suggestion
Our wines should be served chilled but not cold (12°C) and the choice of glassware should resemble a small, elegant wine glass rather than a thin flute.
Enjoy at any time of the day or night. We like it for an aperitif, or with a light fruit dessert : poached pears or an apricot tart.
The neighbouring domain to Salon at Le Mesnil was established as long ago as 1760. It was previously closely linked with Lanson and in 1949 it was taken over by the Nonancourt family. Since Laurent-Perrier bought Salon in 1989, Delamotte has functioned as Salon's second label.
Delamotte owns five hectares at Le Mesnil and has access to Salon's vineyards during the years when no Salon is produced. Didier Dupond runs both firms with great sensitivity and enthusiasm.
Delamotte purchases 75 per cent of its grapes, mostly from Premier cru villages. The 99 is very unalloyed and polished with a nice, uplifting, balanced fruity base. Probably a wine that will reach its peak quite early on. It is reminiscent of a rich Chablis. The 96 magnum is already a classic.
