Expert Reviews

This is a blend to top them all: 44% sauvignon blanc, 30% semillon, 16% chardonnay, 6% chenin blanc, 2% verdelho and 2% riesling. There's no question, the sauvignon blanc and semillon are the drivers, but experience in laboratory bench blend trials tells you 2% of this or that can have a totally disproportionate influence on the final outcome. The flavours linger long after the wine is swallowed, the balance is very good. It's not made to be cellared, but it's not going away any time soon.Drink to 2015. Rating 94 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (JUL/2011)

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Winemaking began on the Cullen property in Margaret River less than 40 years ago. Studies in South Western Australia conducted in the early 1960Â?s showed that Margaret River had some special qualities. The climate was particularly suited to growing Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. On the advice of eminent agronomist Dr John Gladstones, Kevin and Diana Cullen planted a trial acre of vines at Willyabrup in 1966. The encouraging results of this led to the planting of 18acres of vines on the sheep and cattle farm in 1971, including their first Cabernet Sauvignon vines. Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Semillon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc were planted between 1976 and 1978. Cullen Wines has since evolved into an estate specialising in single vineyard, premium quality wines focussed on wine integrity, rather than rapid expansion.
