2013....another great vintage!
Although the weather leading up to and including vintage was warm, the fruit produced by all varieties in the vineyards of Cullen Wines in 2013 was exceptional. Indeed, while yields were down, the quality of the harvest is looking even better than last year and that year was regarded as exceptional! Harvest started on the 6th February and we found ourselves harvesting around the new moon and flower days, rather than the full moon and fruit days as in previous vintages. There were also no super moons in this year’s harvest. During vintage, which was completed as early as the 8th of March, we were very fortunate that the birds stayed away. The natural ferments are “ticking along” very satisfactorily and, as Vanya points out, the only problem is a shortage of the sensational fruit that was produced in 2013!

A 71/29% blend, wild yeast-fermented, with no acid additions; 87% of the wine was matured for 5 months in French barriques (62% new). Follows in a long and proud tradition of exceptionally complex wines that rely on gentle persuasion, not brute force or, if you prefer, seduction rather than rape. The flavours are so attractive and mouthfilling now, it is easy to forget the wine will mature with grace for well over a decade. Rating 97 - Drink by 2023, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (MAR/2014).
Winery Tasting Notes
Vibrant, pale straw with green tinges.
Delightful combination of fresh cut grass, spicy and vanillin oak aromas supported by tropical notes.
Deep, rich and vibrant fruit lifted by mineral flavours. Very complex already with lovely Chilean guava notes and toasty characteristics. A great example of this wine style.
Enjoy now or for up to 15 years.
Marron raviole and lemongrass beurre blanc.
