As with all wines produced at Cullen Wines, this Sauvignon Blanc Semillon is certified as Biodynamic, Carbon Neutral and naturally powered. The warm and dry conditions in Margaret River during the 2011 growing season produced optimal conditions for grape development and also led to an early start to vintage. The fruit reached optimal ripeness at a low Baumé resulting in a wine with high natural acidity and great potential for ageing. The fruit was hand harvested and fermented with natural yeasts, with no acid additions and only limited fining.

Expert Reviews

The typical complex make-up of 69% sauvignon blanc and 31% semillon, with 47% of the wine fermented in French oak, 74% new. The ultra-fragrant bouquet and intense palate are most remarkable for the way they have absorbed the barrel fermentation; it's also virtually impossible to decide whether the aromas and flavours are on the citrus/herbal side, or the riper passionfruit spectrum. Does that matter? I sincerely doubt it.

Rating 96 - Drink by 2021 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (17/JUL/2012)

The record-breaking, early ripening 2011 vintage has given birth to an understated Cullen, making it exceedingly rare among sauvignons as a wine in which texture speaks louder than fruit. A textural grapefruit pith mouthfeel, outstanding presence and a ribbon of long-lingering acidity give form to granny smith apple skin, lime and preserved lemon fruit, with an undercurrent of earth and a hint of ferment funk.

Winery Tasting Notes

Vibrant, pale straw with green tinges.

Intense perfumed nose, combining attractive cut grass and hazelnut aromas and clean vanillin oak.

Wonderful, round middle palate represents a complex amalgam of lemon, floral white flower and papaya flavours and clean background oak. The finish is very long and lingering.

Cellaring Potential

Already drinking superbly, but has all the qualities to develop for several years given suitable cellaring conditions.

Food Matching

Prawns, crabs, scallops and fish.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Winemaking began on the Cullen property in Margaret River less than 40 years ago. Studies in South Western Australia conducted in the early 1960Â?s showed that Margaret River had some special qualities. The climate was particularly suited to growing Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. On the advice of eminent agronomist Dr John Gladstones, Kevin and Diana Cullen planted a trial acre of vines at Willyabrup in 1966. The encouraging results of this led to the planting of 18acres of vines on the sheep and cattle farm in 1971, including their first Cabernet Sauvignon vines. Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Semillon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc were planted between 1976 and 1978. Cullen Wines has since evolved into an estate specialising in single vineyard, premium quality wines focussed on wine integrity, rather than rapid expansion.
