The 2010 season produced wines which were abundant in fruit and had excellent balance. In accordance with biodynamic principles, the grapes were hand harvested on fruit days from the Cabernet Sauvignon vines, which are now 39 years old. The fruit was carefully sorted before fermentation with indigenous yeasts and malolactic bacteria. No acid or yeast was added, producing a wine which has a sense of place through the grapes and natural winemaking techniques employed.

Expert Reviews

A 77/10/6/4/3% blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, petit verdot, malbec and cabernet franc. Confident with the quality of her biodynamically grown estate grapes, Vanya Cullen is taking a gently gently approach with all aspects of the wine. Thus it is medium-bodied at best, but is perfectly balanced and its array of blackcurrant, redcurrant, earth and spice fruit flavours are clearly varietal. Above all else, it is certain the wine will develop beautifully over the next 20-30 years. Since first tasted in Feb '12, its effortless elegance has come to the fore, its medium-bodied elegance setting it in a league of its own.

Rating 96 - Drink by 2040 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (AUG/2012)

Composed of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, 4% Malbec and 3% Cabernet Franc, the 2010 Diana Madeline was aged for an average of 19 months in French barriques, 51% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, it offers an intense perfume of crushed black currants, blackberry preserves and mulberries with underlying clove, cedar, yeast extract, black olive and damp loam hints. The modest light to medium-bodied palate really packs the flavor into an elegant package with layer upon layer of youthful blackberry and spice flavors supported by a firm level of finely grained tannins and crisp acidity, finishing long. It should drink best 2015 to 2028+.

Winery Tasting Notes

Delicate crimson and garnet ruby.

The plum, mulberry and blackcurrant aromas cascade out of the glass bringing high notes of rose and violet. Savoury ironstone and tobacco complete the classic aroma profile of the Diana Madeline.

Fine grained tannin with uplifting and sustained fruit notes. Red fruit and plum flavours connect with the ironstone minerality, providing backbone and structure. This medium bodied elegance is deceptive as the depth and length on the palate are profound.

Drink now and up to 40 years.

Food Matching

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Winemaking began on the Cullen property in Margaret River less than 40 years ago. Studies in South Western Australia conducted in the early 1960Â?s showed that Margaret River had some special qualities. The climate was particularly suited to growing Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. On the advice of eminent agronomist Dr John Gladstones, Kevin and Diana Cullen planted a trial acre of vines at Willyabrup in 1966. The encouraging results of this led to the planting of 18acres of vines on the sheep and cattle farm in 1971, including their first Cabernet Sauvignon vines. Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Semillon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc were planted between 1976 and 1978. Cullen Wines has since evolved into an estate specialising in single vineyard, premium quality wines focussed on wine integrity, rather than rapid expansion.
