Expert Reviews

Refined, very youthful Hawke’s Bay wine, fully barrel-fermented, with substantial body and ripe, citrusy flavours, seasoned with biscuity oak. Concentrated savoury and complex, it’s a classy, tightly structured wine.4 ½ Stars - Michael Cooper, Winestate Magazine (MAY/2010)

Tasted as a finished tank sample, the impressive 2009 Gimblett Gravels Vineyard Chardonnay has a light apple, orange zest and citrus lemon nose with a hint of peach emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly leesy entry, good acidity and subtle honeyed tones leading to a deft, understated, slightly waxy finish.Rating 91- Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (OCT/2010)

The bouquet is gorgeous and sensuous showing white peach, lemon pith and beautifully infused vanillin oak characters. It's elegant and refined on the palate showing a delicate fruit expression, chalky texture and firm acidity providing both structure and length. This is like tasting an excellent young Burgundy - beautifully complex and fragrant yet the palate shows firm profile with glimpses of brilliance and potentially majestic flavours.Rating 91 - 94 Points, 4½ Stars - Sam Kim, Wine Orbit (APR/2010)

Craggy Range offers a chardonnay with fresh, vibrant aromas of mandarin, grapefruit and hints of toasty oak; all of which burst forth in the mouth before leaving a zingy, textural finish. It’s a tipple that’s clean and juicy and will cellar well for another three or four years.Rating 4 Stars - Yvonne Lorkin, Dish Magazine (APR/2010)

“…to say I'm impressed is an understatement. Wines like this are restoring my faith in chardonnay. This is not cheap, mind, it's definitely in the weekend treat category - rounded, full bodied, soft and citrusy; a great expression of Hawke's Bay chardonnay.”Joelle Thomson (APR/2010)

This stylish Hawke's Bay wine is mouthfilling, complex and savoury, with biscuity, nutty characters from fermentation and maturation in French oak barriques. The 2009 vintage is a refined, very youthful wine, with substantial body and ripe, citrusy flavours, seasoned with biscuity oak. Concentrated, savoury and complex, it’s a classy, tightly structured wine, well worth cellaring.4½ Stars - Michael Cooper, Michael Cooper's Wine Buyer's Gude to N ew Zealand Wines 2011

It is a philosophy like no other. To select and source the very best vineyards in the country, plant them with only the vines that are perfectly suited for that terroir. Bottle them all as single estate wines. This simple philosophy, to make wines that speak more of where they come from than any other, is what drives their entire systems of farming and winemaking. Craggy Range has the opportunity to craft a wine business exactly the way it wants to, making the most of 150 years of pioneering winemaking in New Zealand
