Although the grape vine is not indigenous to Australia, our history of winemaking dates back to the arrival of the first Fleet in 1788. Vine cuttings and grape seeds were included in the supplies collected from Rio de Janeiro and the Cape of Good Hope to planted on the first vineyard site, near where Sydney's Opera House stands today.

The wines of Capricornia capture the spirit of diversity bringing together the flavours and characters from across the vast tapestry of Australia's viticultural landscape.

Winery Tasting Notes

Lively golden hues flash on the edges while the core is brilliant mid yellow.

The bouquet has typical ripe peach and rock melon character jumping out of the glass on first impression. Deeper on the nose is creamy roasted cashew nut and vanilla custard tart with a hint of spice and confection.

On the palate the fruit is more subtle and there’s the distinctive character of cashew nuts and toasty oak. The palate weight is full and the finish is clean and dry with a supple, creamy richness.

Food Matching

This is a lovely full flavoured Chardonnay for any occasion. It’s ideal with smoked salmon and capers or oysters with lime juice and cracked pepper or steamed prawns straight out of the shell. Make sure not to over-chill to maximize the natural bouquet and flavour.

Cellaring Potential

The major export market for Capricornia wines is the resort islands of the Maldives where it features on many restaurant wine lists by the glass. The combination of its creamy texture, fruit and oak balance make it a universal favourite. You can enjoy it now and for up to a further 4 – 5 years.
