Overview

Cabernet in the Clare Valley is distinct and powerful. It is one of the stronger varieties suited to the growing conditions and terroir of the region. The use of Malbec has a generous and appealing impact on the sometimes edgy and potent characters of Cabernet. They work hand in hand to give balance and richness to the drinker. Still distinctly Cabernet with violets, leafy notes and red fruits, this wine is a approachable and a delight to any Cabernet Sauvignon or Malbec fan.

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

Bright, dark red.

Aroma

A swirl in the glass and you are instantly greeted with violets, red fruits of raspberry and cherry with a hint of cedar and leaf. The Malbec works to lift the aromas and give a subtle show of fig.

Palate

Primary fruits, like having a mouthful of blueberries, are dominant and with the careful selection of oak, and enhanced with hint of leather and cedar. Round and elegant tannins are showing from the inclusion of Malbec which works to give this year’s Cabernet a more plush and generous palate.

Food Match

Surprisingly Cabernet also works well with a meaty fish such as cod however lamb and steak are the natural choices. Among my favourite recipes are olive crusted lamb racks with roasted baby Spring vegetables and simple lamb cutlets with potatoes and crushed peas.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Claymore Wines, situated in the beautiful Clare Valley in South Australia, began in 1997 with small volumes of Grenache and Riesling, and has now grown to almost 15,000 cases per year across a highly awarded range of wines.

We draw fruit from our five premium estate owned vineyards at Penwortham (the backbone of our red wine production) and Watervale (home to our Joshua Tree vineyard). These sites have been specifically chosen for their suitability for our staple varieties – Shiraz, Riesling, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Our labelling is inspired by some of the great music of modern time - from rock, punk and folk. Our wines are about bringing together great passions to create the ultimate experience. We pride ourselves on meticulous winemaking using only the best fruit, but when it comes to enjoying a glass we don't take ourselves too seriously! So turn up the volume on a soundtrack of your choice, crack a bottle with friends, and relax.
