Winery Tasting Notes
The 2011 il Vescovo McLaren Vale White is fresh, complex and intriguing. Aromas of citrus blossom, pawpaw, honeycomb and spice are wrapped in an ethereal waft of smoke and candyfloss. The palate oozes with juicy white nectarine and blood orange.
This deliciously textured wine is pulled into focus by a gravelly acid spine and the lingering citrus pith finish leaves you salivating for a tasty morsel or another cheeky glass!
Savagnin 45%, Verdelho 30%, Roussanne 25%
Savagnin is native to the Jura region in Eastern France. Hand harvested from our Kangarilla vineyards, the grapes were gently crushed, chilled and then skin contacted in the press to encourage extraction of the opulent and textural fruit flavours present in Savagnin’s thick skin. 6 months aging on yeast lees in neutral French oak builds texture into the inherent orange blossom aromas, nectarine flavours and minerality.
Verdelho, a Portuguese variety, is prized for its natural acidity and longevity. Grown at our Kangarilla vineyards in the foothills of the Mt Lofty Ranges. The gully winds and elevation ensure a cool meso-climate perfect for nurturing delicately flavoured white grapes. Early picking then cool fermentation and maturation in stainless steel, captures the fresh herbaceous characters and zesty lime palate.
Roussanne is a key variety of the white blends of the Northern and Southern Rhone where it contributes aromatics, richness and structure. The vines, grown near Willunga, are hand harvested to maintain the delicate aromatics. Fermentation and maturation on lees are in five year old French hogsheads. Regular lees stirring builds a creamy mouthfeel into the aromas of quince and meyer lemon.
