Expert Reviews

Impenetrable colour, dark and brooding in character with concentrated black fruits, spice and toasty oak all playing a major role on the bouquet; the palate is densely packed with absolutely everything but the kitchen sink, yet manages to relay a sense of lightness on the finish; an essay in contained power.

Rating 95 - Drink by 2035 - Ben Edwards, James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion (MAR/2012)

Winery Tasting Notes

The Vicar 2010 Shiraz displays charismatic layers of blueberry, roasted fennel seeds and cured meats, which are seamlessly interwoven into the firm, but poised, savoury texture.

The synergistic balance of the cascading layers of varietal flavour, palate weight, tannin and acidity will ensure that the wine will develop further complexity over the next 15 to 20 years.

A leading medium-sized winery in the region. In 2000 Chapel Hill was sold to the Swiss Thomas Schmidheiny group, which owns the respected Cuvaison winery in California as well as vineyards in Switzerland and Argentina. Wine quality is as good, if not better, than ever. Winemaker Michael Fragos was named Winemaker of the Year at London's International Wine & Spirit Competition '08. The production comes from the estate plantings of shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, verdelho, savagnin, sangiovese and merlot, together with purchased grapes from McLaren Vale.
