Expert Reviews

I should not have been surprised by how good the 2009 Chapel Hill il Vesco Sangiovese tastes, but after my first sip I couldn't help thinking: what a fantastic wine this is, and what outstanding value, too!

Life can't help but feel good when you've got a wine like this in your hands. It tastes of chocolate, kirsch, dried herbs and fresh cherries. It's tannic in a chewy way, acidic in a mouth-watering fashion, and immensely enjoyable to quaff, especially with rustic, comforting foods. This is the kind of wine that modern Australian shold champion and celebrate. I know I'm buying some. Campbell Mattinson, Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine (FEB-MAR/2011)

Food Matching

The higher natural acidity and firm tannin of Sangiovese allows it to pair well with many Mediterranean style food choices, particularly tomato based dishes.

Winemaking Notes

The grapes were fermented in small open fermenters and gently hand plunged to encourage the referential extraction of the subtle savoury tannins and to avoid any astringent tannins. After a total of 9 days on skins the ferment was then basket pressed. The wine was then racked to two, three and four year old French oak barrels in order to encourage the expression of the grainy varietal tannins.
