DO: Priorat

A small pocket of black hills of volcanic origin where red wines of superb quality have been made for over eight centuries. Priorat is located in Tarragona (North-East of Spain). The vineyards are scattered among eleven valley towns, and are terraced or planted on steep slopes. The bedrock, called llicorella, consists of reddish and black slate. The climate is more extreme than most continental areas. There are cold northern winds, and the warm Mistral blows in from the east. Summers are long, dry and hot, although the temperature may fall to zero in winter. Average annual temperature: 15°C. Average rainfall: 400-600 mm.

Expert Reviews

“In the nose this is a wine with a high intensity, concentrated, with ageing notes left by the toasted barrels, smoked, cocoa and incense notes, without forgetting the generous fruit (ripe red fruits), the wild herbs and a certain minerality which is typical of the area. In the mouth it is

tasteful, juicy, with a generous acidity very well blended with the ripe tannins. A deep wine. It displays ageing notes in the after taste and it has a long finish”.Guía Vivir el Vino 2008

The 2006 Cruor offers up restrained toast and spice notes leading to an elegantly styled wine with savory flavors and a lengthy, seamless finish. Drink this tasty effort over the next 6-8 years. The 2004 Cruor stands head and shoulders above its siblings. It was a superb vintage in Priorat and this wine reflects the ideal conditions of the growing season. It offers up the most expressive aromatics, a kinky concoction of herbs, tar, tapenade, and black cherry. Dense, rich, full-bodied, and multi-dimensional, this lengthy wine tastes like a Priorat selling for three times the price. Rating 89 - Jay Miller, Wine Advocate (MAY/2011)

Winery Profile

The farmhouse locally known as La Casa Gran can be found on the outskirts of the town of Bellmunt del Priorat, on the banks of the river Siurana. It is a building with a three hundred years history.

It was previously inhabited by the Carthusian monks from the nearby monastery of Scala Dei. In the XII century, this monastic order introduced vine-growing into this region, which has become one of the most renowned regions for winemaking in the world today.

In the lands surrounding La Casa Gran, lands that previously bore witness to the monks’ solemn vows of silence, Cruor and Gran Cruor, two modern and elegant red wines were born, wines that nowadays vie for a prestigious position amongst the Q.D.O. Priorat elite.
