A blend of 4 grape varieties, the flavours of plum, sweet spicy cassis, mint and earthy violets combine with long fine-grained tannins and sweet oak.

Cellaring Potential

Age from 3-12 years, earlier for a more fruity style.

Winemaking Note

The fruit was crushed and de-stemmed into 2000 litre tanks, cold macerated for 3 days and fermented with a mixture of wild and inoculated yeasts. Temperatures reached 32ºC with a 4 hourly hand plunging and daily rack and returns. The wine then spent 28 days undergoing extended maceration.

76% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Malbec and 6% Cabernet Franc matured for 16 months in predominantly new French oak barriques.

Winery Profile

Told in 1988 that it was" too cold to grow wine grapes", Tim Turvey went ahead and bought this property at Te Awanga, HB. He took this as a challenge, and together with business partner Helma van den Berg, they planted the first vines were in winter 1988. They went on to plant 2500 trees, including avocados, olives, melia and bay trees, lavender and citrus. Vineyard plantings were continued at 3 acres per annum. Tim and Helma grafted and planted their grapevines, rammed the posts, ran the wires and trained the young vines, for many years also doing all the pruning. They also designed and built the winery, adding to the cellar door and restaurant as the business grew.

Twenty years down the track the vines, the wines and the restaurant are 'doing very nicely now - thank you very much!'

The Reserve Chardonnay has achieved Super Classic Wine Status, and received Gold and/or 5 Stars in each vintage since 1992.

Opened in 1991, the coastal vineyard restaurant rates highly, consistently nominated in the Hospitality Awards, receiving BEEF & LAMB awards since 1998. The 'red shed' has become a dining destination of rustic integrity for local and international visitors alike.
