Overview

Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2014 has enticing aromas of kaffir lime leaf and grapefruit and the palate reveals ripe citrus, stone fruit and lemongrass flavours.

Grapes for the Sauvignon Blanc 2014 were sourced from estate and grower vineyards located in the Rapaura, Fairhall, Renwick and Brancott sub-regions of the Wairau Valley.

The 2014 season was true to the old farmer adage ‘early summer, early winter’. The warm spring brought early budburst and resulted in the second earliest harvest in 30 years at Cloudy Bay. Careful crop management ensured only the highest quality fruit was used in the 2014 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc. Resulting in an intense, concentrated and sophisticated expression of Marlborough sauvignon blanc.

Expert Reviews

Almost the empirical standard for sauvignon blanc for New Zealand, let alone Marlborough, let alone those wine regions want to ride the coat-tails. Hello 2014. I remember when I worked in retail land we used to have Cloudy Bay sauvignon blanc on allocation and there was a frenzy for the wine, we had to beg the supplier for more, even if we got a healthy allocation. I reckon the volume is there now.

Gosh, you could take the perfume and put it under 'Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc' in an encyclopaedia with its passion fruit, light grassiness, pretty spice, dried herb and faint slate - like mineral notes. To taste, a refreshing, cool, clean, compact white of wicked refreshment, trim chalkiness and mouthwatering finish. Length isn't quite there, but the flavours are citrus - licked, lightly herbal and true. Pitch perfect, every-person sauvignon blanc. Well done."

The Cloudy Bay team is committed to producing ‘wines of region’ and strives to enhance the pure, bracing flavours and stunning vibrancy, naturally afforded by the climate and soils of Marlborough.

The winery and vineyards are situated in the Wairau Valley in Marlborough at the northern end of New Zealand's South Island. This unique and cool wine region enjoys a maritime climate with the longest hours of sunshine of any place in New Zealand. Cloudy Bay has 250 hectares over four estate vineyards, and long-term supply agreements with nine Wairau Valley growers. The main varieties grown are sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and pinot noir with lesser quantities of gewurztraminer, riesling, and pinot gris.

Cloudy Bay wines are exported to over 30 markets, the principal ones being Australia, United Kingdom, USA, Europe and Japan. Cloudy Bay believes that the future success of specialist wineries lies in the production of high quality wines from varieties best suited to specific regions. At Cloudy Bay, emphasis is placed on individual fruit character and the development of a recognisable estate wine style.

Cloudy Bay Vineyards was a founding member of the New Zealand Integrated Winegrape Production scheme, set up to develop a programme for sustainable vineyard management, which is now monitored by Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand. Cloudy Bay’s impeccable scorecard reflects the company’s commitment to environmentally friendly winery and vineyard management practices.

The winery takes its name from the bay at the eastern extremity of the Wairau Valley, which was named Cloudy Bay by Captain Cook on his voyage to New Zealand in 1770. At the time of Cook’s discovery, Marlborough was in flood and the Wairau River running into the bay was full of silt creating cloudy waters.
