Cape Barren wines are produced from vineyards particularly hand selected for their exceptional quality and consistency. Our reds are produced from the world renowned McLaren Vale region, from vines older than 45 years. These seriously old vines produce wines of supreme concentration and complexity not seen in younger vines. It is this history on which our future lies.

Winery Tasting Notes

Vibrant and attractive green hue of medium intensity.

Very lifted attractive characters dominated by tropical intensity of guava and gooseberry mixed with lime juice characters and grapefruit freshness.

The palate is dominated by the silky texture and richness of tropical fruits, which sit nicely with citrus zing and freshness, leaving the mouth yearning for more. The result is a wine of astonishing length and residual fruitiness.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Cape Barren, named after the rare Cape Barren Geese that are regular visitors to the vineyard, is the passion of owners Brian Ledgard & Peter Matthews.

The unique McLaren Vale maritime climate offers long warm summers cooled by afternoon ocean breezes, thus providing the ideal ripening conditions for grapes destined for full-bodied red wine.

All fruit for Cape Barren Old Vine Shiraz is sourced from a single seventy year old vineyard at Blewitt Springs that has previously been used to produce some of South Australia's icon wines.
