Overview

Ripe cherry and rhubarb aromas marry seamlessly with sweet biscuit-like vanilla French oak overlaying a long low note of forest floor and under growth. Reflecting the quality of the extraordinary 2009 season, the nose is rich and intoxicating. Tightly wound at first the palate has crisp (just picked) fruit acidity, balanced alcohol, round supple tannins which are ethereal and compelling. Our best effort yet.

Expert Reviews

Bright mid garnet; complex whole bunch aromas of cold tea, nutmeg, licorice, rhubarb and beets; the palate provides some crunchy red fruits, fine-grained tannin and a fleshy, savoury conclusion. Rating 92 - Drink by 2015 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (JAN/2011)

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Inspired by a landscape that reminded him of his beloved Scotland, explorer and squatter Angus McMillan was so moved by his first view of eastern Victoria from Mount Macleod in 1839, that he "...named it at the moment Caledonia Australis". Caledonia, an old name for Scotland, and Australis, meaning southern is the region now known as Gippsland. Today certain privileged vineyard sites around the Gippsland town of Leongatha are proving to have the terroir essential for producing high quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines.

Caledonia Australis was the vision of a group of wine enthusiasts in the early 1990s to create quality Burgundian style wines, assisted by our talented wine maker and Master of Wine, Martin Williams, who shares this vision. Our approach to winemaking is true to Burgundy style. We seek the natural expression of regionality to produce wines that faithfully reflect our vineyards strengths and uniqueness. We embrace the principles of minimal winemaking intervention, applying contemporary technology as appropriate to achieve similar or superior results to traditional techniques. The results are wines of classic style and outstanding quality.
