Overview

A near faultless summer of bright sunshine and moderate temperatures provided ideal conditions for producing naturally balanced fruit and wines at full physiological ripeness. As always with Catalina Sounds, we have allowed the fruit to tell its story and added an extra layer of interest via a small amount of oak fermentation and aging on yeast lees, to coax out the interesting textural elements of the wine.

Expert Reviews

Discreet but perfumed aroma, fresh and vital, with juicy peppermint overtones to the citrus, herbal and tropical fruit fl avours. Very intense, clean, precise palate with focused fl avour of great charm and pristine freshness. The fi nish lingers long. This is a very entertaining wine and will delight Marlborough savvy lovers. Very good intensity and palate length. A ripper. Rating 95 - Huon Hooke, Number 1 2013 Sauvignon Blanc Tasted frin Marlborough (APR/2014)

Bright, very pale straw colour with slight green hues, near colourless on the rim. Refined and delicately expressed, ripe gooseberry aromas are lifted by white fl oral and fresh herb notes on the bouquet. Dry to taste and medium bodied, smooth-flowing flavours of gooseberries, white florals and minerally elements build on the palate, forming a positive core with linearity. The fruit has some lusciousness enlivened by fresh, lacy acidity and the flavours are carried by very fine phenolic textures to a detailed, dry finish. This is a refined and subtly building Sauvignon Blanc with gooseberry and floral flavours. Serve as an aperitif, with seafood and poultry over the next 2+ years. 4 Stars - Raymond Chan

Its zesty, lively and fragrant, dispalying passionfruit, feijoa, lime zest and herbaceous aromas on the nose, followed by an intensity flavoured palate thats

filled with attractive flavours. The wine is crisp and lingering. At its best now until 2016. Rating 4.5 Stars - Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

Winery Profile

The name Catalina Sounds evolved from the majestic Catalina flying boats that played a vital role across the South pacific during and after World War II. New Zealand’s famous and largest warbird, the Catalina is a rare sight, in fact there are only a handful of these beautiful, iconic planes left in the world today, and we are lucky enough to be associated with one based right here in New Zealand. Through our sponsorship of this rare, passenger carrying, amphibious flying boat we are in some small way helping to ensure the Catalina continues to grace the skies around the stunning Marlborough Sounds and high over the vineyards in the Waihopai Valley where we have made our home.

We draw inspiration for our wines from these graceful, unique flying boats and the respect in which they are held, together with the pristine and awe inspiring environment of the Marlborough Sounds – right on our doorstep. With attention to detail, we strive for our wines to step outside the norm and show individuality and personality, garnering respect wherever they are poured, while harnessing the purity and vibrancy that Marlborough’s climate and landscape are naturally blessed with.

Here at Catalina Sounds Wines we are proud to have an on-going association with the New Zealand Catalina Preservation Society and hope to continue our past sponsorship of the plane at various air shows and events around the country once she is fully restored and back up in our skies in the near future.
