Overview

From the moment the picking crews were booked, I knew we had the makings for a smart wine from 2013. The growing season had been dry, warm and long, without excessive heat, making for ideal conditions for elegant flavour development whilst retaining natural acidity. Once harvested, the parcels of wine were gently handled and really left to themselves to express each vineyard site as clearly and as naturally as possible. 10 months of oak aging afforded the wine time to soften and integrate prior to blending and bottling. I hope you enjoy this wine as much as I do.

Expert Reviews

Full, even, dark ruby-red colour with some purple hues. The nose is full with soft, dark raspberry and black cherry fruit aromas, revealing subtle savoury dark herb and earthy elements, the aromatics gentle in expression, building depth and volume with aeration. Medium-full bodied flavours of dark cherries, ripe raspberries and delicate spice notes show good depth and a subtly sweet richness. There is density to the fruit extract and a smooth, harmonious integration with fine-grained tannins providing a seamless structure and line. The mouthfeel has liveliness and freshness from bright acidity, enhancing the fruitiness, the palate leading to a fruity finish with refined texture. This is a harmonious and restrained Pinot Noir that grows in richness, revealing fine structure. 4 Stars - Raymond Chan, Wine Review (MAY/2014)

Winery Profile

The name Catalina Sounds evolved from the majestic Catalina flying boats that played a vital role across the South pacific during and after World War II. New Zealand’s famous and largest warbird, the Catalina is a rare sight, in fact there are only a handful of these beautiful, iconic planes left in the world today, and we are lucky enough to be associated with one based right here in New Zealand. Through our sponsorship of this rare, passenger carrying, amphibious flying boat we are in some small way helping to ensure the Catalina continues to grace the skies around the stunning Marlborough Sounds and high over the vineyards in the Waihopai Valley where we have made our home.

We draw inspiration for our wines from these graceful, unique flying boats and the respect in which they are held, together with the pristine and awe inspiring environment of the Marlborough Sounds – right on our doorstep. With attention to detail, we strive for our wines to step outside the norm and show individuality and personality, garnering respect wherever they are poured, while harnessing the purity and vibrancy that Marlborough’s climate and landscape are naturally blessed with.

Here at Catalina Sounds Wines we are proud to have an on-going association with the New Zealand Catalina Preservation Society and hope to continue our past sponsorship of the plane at various air shows and events around the country once she is fully restored and back up in our skies in the near future.
