Pinot Noir is anything but predictable – both in the vineyard and winery – it is a variety that has many personalities, often choosing to do the opposite of what we expect. With a challenge like that, who isn’t intrigued?

From picking decisions, through processing, fermentation, pressing and maturation, we are meticulous, yet always keep in mind that minimal intervention is the best approach to this fascinating variety. The future is bright for Catalina Sounds Pinot Noir, with our focus being on producing a classy, single vineyard, wild fermented, complex wine, matured in 100% French oak, in a mixture of new and older barriques.

Winery Tasting Notes

Deep garnet red.

An alluring mixture of dark berry fruits, lifted florals and spice with underlying savoury notes.

Elegant and silken with wild, dark berry flavours and gentle dried herb notes. Medium bodied, the palate is structured and graceful with plush fruit and exceptional fruit and tannin integration which lingers in the mouth.

Winemakers comments

I believe 2012 will be a hallmark year for Marlborough Pinot Noir - a year where the wines made themselves. Crops were very light (as low as 2T/Ha in some vineyards) but the quality was exceptional with terrific flavour and structure at moderate sugar levels. As always, our ambition with the Catalina Sounds Pinot Noir is to create a wine that honestly reflects the origins of the fruit and purity of the season. We have done this through a combination of gentle, sensitive handling, natural fermentation and minimal intervention.

Winery Profile

The name Catalina Sounds evolved from the majestic Catalina flying boats that played a vital role across the South pacific during and after World War II. New Zealand’s famous and largest warbird, the Catalina is a rare sight, in fact there are only a handful of these beautiful, iconic planes left in the world today, and we are lucky enough to be associated with one based right here in New Zealand. Through our sponsorship of this rare, passenger carrying, amphibious flying boat we are in some small way helping to ensure the Catalina continues to grace the skies around the stunning Marlborough Sounds and high over the vineyards in the Waihopai Valley where we have made our home.

We draw inspiration for our wines from these graceful, unique flying boats and the respect in which they are held, together with the pristine and awe inspiring environment of the Marlborough Sounds – right on our doorstep. With attention to detail, we strive for our wines to step outside the norm and show individuality and personality, garnering respect wherever they are poured, while harnessing the purity and vibrancy that Marlborough’s climate and landscape are naturally blessed with.

Here at Catalina Sounds Wines we are proud to have an on-going association with the New Zealand Catalina Preservation Society and hope to continue our past sponsorship of the plane at various air shows and events around the country once she is fully restored and back up in our skies in the near future.
