Expert Reviews

The 2012 Bobbie Burns was good without being a peak release. 2013 turned out to be a (very) good season for reds. The result?

This is a real goodun’. Chocolatey, berried, grunty, blessed with iodine and leather characters, then herbal and rusty to close. Full of both flavour and personality. Great buying. Characterful in a bold way. Rating 93 - Drink by 2028, Campbell Mattinson, (MAR/2015).

Winery Tasting Notes

Deep dark red with purple hues.

The nose has real depth, almost brooding, dark plums and blackberry perfectly integrated with the more elegant characters of black pepper and aniseed, a hint of spicy oak sitting in the background.

This wine reflects the vintage it is full bodied with mouth filling plum and mulberry fruit yet the palate is beautifully structured with layers of fine tannin and complimentary characters of liquorice ironstone and cocoa. A wonderful vintage that could be very special in time.

Cellaring Potential

Our long history with this wine suggests it will continue to develop in the bottle for a further 10-12 years.

Food Matching

Enjoy now with a Moroccan spice rubbed fillet of beef or over time with slow braised beef or lamb.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Campbells winery and vineyards are situated in the historic Rutherglen Wine Region of North East Victoria.

Brothers Malcolm and Colin are the fourth generation to carry on the Campbell tradition started by their great grandfather John Campbell in Rutherglen in 1870. Together with their wives Jenny and Prue, they have forged a strong reputation for Campbells as a benchmark Rutherglen wine producer.

The brothers are an ideal team with Malcolm as viticulturist and Colin as winemaker. They have 160 acres of vineyard all within the historic Rutherglen Wine Region and are a true estate grown and bottled operation.

This means we have the ability to nurture our wines from vine to bottle. As Colin says, “Our wines are like our children, we bring them into this world and take great pride and joy in holding their hands and watching them grow”.

Malcolm's approach in the vineyard is quite simple, “Quality even at the expense of quantity is our aim. We assist nature, we don't seek to dominate her.”

Colin believes his role as winemaker is to maximize and protect the natural fruit flavours. His skill is in making wines with structure and balance that can confidently be aged; a hallmark of Campbells Wines.

Today the fifth generation of Campbells is adding their enthusiasm and skills. How excited would their great great grandfather John Campbell be to see this dedication to the Campbell name!
