The Barkly is what we believe durif from the Rutherglen Wine Region should be. Unquestionably, it is durif at its finest. Campbells release The Barkly only in years when vintage conditions are exceptional for Durif.

Winery Tasting Notes

Dark garnet with lighter ruby highlights towards the rim.

Dark garnet with lighter ruby highlights towards the rim. Lifted notes of violet, lavender and scented raspberry sit above a core of dark blueberry and blood plum fruit.

Strikingly elegant at first with a full spectrum of red and black fruit characters up front. The wine builds in weight and intensity through the mid palate with generous fruit flavour, fine but firm fruit tannins, and balancing oak all playing a role. There is a subtle savoury note woven through the wine that counters the riper fruit characters nicely, and will continue to add interest and complexity as the wine ages.

Cellaring Potential

The wine is approachable in its youth, but the impressive fruit weight, and firm tannin structure of the wine suggests a cellaring potential of 12-15 years.

Food Matching

Enjoy in its youth with hot smoked loin of venison, or as a mature wine with slow cooked lamb or beef dishes.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Campbells winery and vineyards are situated in the historic Rutherglen Wine Region of North East Victoria.

Brothers Malcolm and Colin are the fourth generation to carry on the Campbell tradition started by their great grandfather John Campbell in Rutherglen in 1870. Together with their wives Jenny and Prue, they have forged a strong reputation for Campbells as a benchmark Rutherglen wine producer.

The brothers are an ideal team with Malcolm as viticulturist and Colin as winemaker. They have 160 acres of vineyard all within the historic Rutherglen Wine Region and are a true estate grown and bottled operation.

This means we have the ability to nurture our wines from vine to bottle. As Colin says, “Our wines are like our children, we bring them into this world and take great pride and joy in holding their hands and watching them grow”.

Malcolm's approach in the vineyard is quite simple, “Quality even at the expense of quantity is our aim. We assist nature, we don't seek to dominate her.”

Colin believes his role as winemaker is to maximize and protect the natural fruit flavours. His skill is in making wines with structure and balance that can confidently be aged; a hallmark of Campbells Wines.

Today the fifth generation of Campbells is adding their enthusiasm and skills. How excited would their great great grandfather John Campbell be to see this dedication to the Campbell name!
