Winery Tasting Notes

Deep red.

Fragrant and complex, with the shiraz component contributing scented raspberry fruit, and durif adding violet and black cherry characters. Subtle earth notes in the background add savory appeal.

Shiraz is pre-dominant upfront with spicy raspberry and black cherry fruit. Durif soon makes its presence felt through the mid palate, with savory black olive and bitter chocolate notes adding appeal, and fine tannins drawing the wine out to a long and persistent finish.

Cellaring Potential

This wine is surprisingly well integrated and drinking well on release, but has the structure and balance to reward five or more years of careful cellaring.

Food Matching

Enjoy with aromatic beef empañadas or simple wood fired pizza.

Winemaking Note

Fruit was harvested early in March and then fermented on skins for approximately seven days. After blending, the wine was matured in French and American oak casks for 12 months.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Campbells winery and vineyards are situated in the historic Rutherglen Wine Region of North East Victoria.

Brothers Malcolm and Colin are the fourth generation to carry on the Campbell tradition started by their great grandfather John Campbell in Rutherglen in 1870. Together with their wives Jenny and Prue, they have forged a strong reputation for Campbells as a benchmark Rutherglen wine producer.

The brothers are an ideal team with Malcolm as viticulturist and Colin as winemaker. They have 160 acres of vineyard all within the historic Rutherglen Wine Region and are a true estate grown and bottled operation.

This means we have the ability to nurture our wines from vine to bottle. As Colin says, “Our wines are like our children, we bring them into this world and take great pride and joy in holding their hands and watching them grow”.

Malcolm's approach in the vineyard is quite simple, “Quality even at the expense of quantity is our aim. We assist nature, we don't seek to dominate her.”

Colin believes his role as winemaker is to maximize and protect the natural fruit flavours. His skill is in making wines with structure and balance that can confidently be aged; a hallmark of Campbells Wines.

Today the fifth generation of Campbells is adding their enthusiasm and skills. How excited would their great great grandfather John Campbell be to see this dedication to the Campbell name!
