The Victorian Pyrenees region is one of the few regions in Australia capable of producing consistent and distinctive high quality Merlot. The 2011 / 2012 grape growing season was ideal in many respects with good winter and spring rains followed by the mildest summer and Autumn for many years allowing plenty of flavour development in the berries. Displaying definitive varietal and regional character, this wine was produced from selected parcels of grapes sourced only from our estate vineyard. The Blue Pyrenees Merlot 2012 was fermented over 1 week in traditional 15-tonne static fermenters, followed by a 1 week extended maceration on skins in the fermenter before pressing and subsequent maturation for 18 months in mature French oak barriques.

Winery Tasting Notes

Ruby red with a purple hue.

Fragrant violets, red berry fruit, regional mint and background French oak.

A vibrant mouthful of fresh plum-like fruit complemented by forest floor flavours of mint leaves, earth and cedar wood. Medium-bodied with a firm structure from the fine grain tannins, this Merlot is memorable for its fragrance and lingering bright fruit flavours that invite immediate drinking, however some cellaring time will also reward those who are patient.

Can be enjoyed now or cellared with confidence for 5 years.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Blue Pyrenees - then called Chateau Remy - was established in Western Victoria in 1963 by Remy Martin. Remy Martin was committed to discovering the superb sparkling wine potential of the worlds cool climate wine regions and in fact subsequently became the force behind Champagne Houses Krug and Charles Heidsieck. Blue Pyrenees Estate was among the modern Australian wine industry’s first ventures into cool climate viticulture. Ample amounts of sunshine ensure our grapes ripen to full maturity with the heat moderated by altitude vineyards and southerly ocean winds. The climate is warm enough to give concentration and power, yet cool enough to give vibrancy and elegance, resulting in remarkable wines from Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Our Estate is surrounded by the picturesque blue-hued Pyrenees range named for its beauty and similarity to the Pyrenees mountains bordering France and Spain, though some think this explorer’s memory of what constituted a mountain may have been distorted by his long voyage across the flat seas of the Pacific!

French eccentricity was the hallmark of the Estate and the brand’s creation. In 2002 the Estate was purchased by a group of Australian wine-passionate businessmen. Eccentricity, with a New World twist, is guaranteed to continue with a new, innovative management and winemaking team at Blue Pyrenees Estate.
