Expert Reviews

Straw-green; a beautifully balanced and proportioned wine with nectarine and white peach fruit, subtle French oak, and a dazzlingly long finish and aftertaste achieved without obvious effort. The vineyard speaks for itself.Rating 95 - James Halliday, Asutralian Wine Companion (AUG/2011)

Light, elegant and long. Winemaking finesse. Clean. Complex and dense middle palate filled out with a hint of charry oak. A youthful and crisp aftertaste. This too will improve for a decade. Though not cheap, this is still a bargain in its quality peer group.Rating 18.5/20 - John Jens, Western Suburbs Weekly (22/JUN/2011)

Winery Tasting Notes

The wine has an attractive aroma of varietal (rich peach and melons aromas) and wood characters, with strong and complex flavours on the long palate.

Food Matching

Due to its excellent flavour the wine will match well with a range of flavoursome dishes, including shellfish, white meats and tempura.

Cellaring Potential

As the wine ages its richness will intensify. It is bottled under a Stelvin screw cap to retain freshness and to promote long life.

Winemaking Note

The grapes selected to produce the Ashbrook Estate 2009 Chardonnay were picked in excellent condition with attractive, strong fruit flavours. Excellent growing season conditions meant that picking occurred at the “average time” (end of February). The growing season allowed for the development of typical varietal characteristics, a trait seen in all the 2009 white wines. As in previous years the juice from the grapes was 50% fermented in new French oak barriques and the

rest in stainless steel tanks. The young wine then spent approximately eight months maturing in the wood on the fermentation lees.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

“This estate is one of the quietest and highest achievers in Australia, maintaining excellent viticulture and fastidious winemaking. It is hard to choose between the complex, herby, tropical Semillon, or subtly oaked, long Chardonnay, the crisp Sauvignon Blanc or briar- and cassis Cabernet.” James Halliday.

In 1975, after considerable evaluation and thorough searching for land suitable for premium wine production, the Devitt family purchased and named Ashbrook Estate in Wilyabrup.

It is one of the ten original vineyard wineries in Margaret River and to this day is still owned and operated by the Devitts. With abundant technical expertise, a rare and highly sought after location, an ideal climate and a well equipped winery, Ashbrook has an enviable record for consistently producing high quality wines.

At Ashbrook the vines are mainly grown on specialised Lyre trellis to maximise flavour development. All fruit is hand picked. Ashbrook is one of the few wine producers where all fruit processed is estate grown and all wine is made and bottled on site using their own equipment. This gives greater focus and control over the total winemaking process.
