Overview

The Rocky Knoll is a small block at Amisfield Vineyard whose soil differs greatly from the areas around it. It consists mainly of glacial deposits left by the retreat of the giant Wanaka glacier some tens of thousands of years ago. Planted with 100% Dijon clones, from the first vintage in 2003 we realised that this parcel was something unique.

Following traditional Burgundian techniques the winemaking has been deliberately hands off to allow the unique terroir to fully express itself. We are immensely proud to produce the Rocky Knoll (RKV) Reserve Pinot Noir as it epitomises our 'Grown Not Made' philosophy.

Expert Reviews

A late release from the outstanding 2007 vintage. Fermented with a 30% whole bunches and aged for 18months in oak before lengthy bottle maturation. Dense, dark wine with intense dark berry and plum flavours intertwined with spicy oak. Power-packaged with an incredibly long finish. This is a very serious pinot noir that makes a strong point about the ageing potentially for solidly structured wines made deliberately with longevity in mind. Will deliver great pleasure for another decade.

Deep, moderately youthful colour. Concentrated and supple, with cherry, plum, herb and nut flavours, showing excellent complexity and harmony. Maturing very gracefully.

Simply superb. Only the third release of the Rocky Knoll vineyard - in effect the Grand Cru vineyard of Amisfield. Aroma

The aroma evokes a trio of cherry liquor, violets and cigar box.

Palate

On the palate the wine shows precision with velvety smooth tannins and impeccable balance. Enjoy this wine with roasted duck in a rich gravy or perhaps even a dark chocolate torte served with wild berries. This very special wine is ready for drinking now but will reward you with years of interesting and changing flavour development with cellaring.

Cellaring

This wine will continue to develop from now until 2018.

Amisfield Wine Company was established in 1988 and is a Central Otago based specialist producer of Pinot Noir and aromatic white wines created from fruit grown on their Estate vineyard beneath the Pisa Mountain range in the Cromwell Basin.

This privately owned company's 200ha property, once a prominent high country merino station, is one of the largest single vineyard estates in the Central Otago region. Over 80ha is currently planted with the majority of the vines being over ten years old.

Amisfield wines reflect the company's grape growing and winemaking philosophy underlining faithful expression of site, minimal winemaking intervention and ultimate fruit purity. Stringent yield management practices deliver concentrated fruit flavour, consistency and complexity derived from the range of soils found on the vineyard.A state-of-the-art purpose built winery is the focal point of the vineyard and produces 20,000 -30,000 cases of wine annually. Pinot Noir accounts for over 60% of the production with the balance made up of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Riesling.

Wines are showcased at Amisfield's Lake Hayes Bistro and Wine Tasting Room where more than 50,000 New Zealand and international guests sample the range of vintages every year.
