The 2011 White Label chardonnay was fermented in a combination of French Oak barriques, one and two years old, and stainless steel tanks. The wines fermented in oak were then lees strained once per week, and these components underwent partial malo-lactic fermentation. The tank fermented parcels were also lees strained, using inert Co2 gas. After nine months in oak, the wine was racked from barrel and blended with the tank fermented components. The blend was then given a milk-fining, before filtration to bottle.

"For about half the price of the regular Petaluma chardonnay, white label delivers the vitality and intense nectarine and grapefruit like varietal flavours of a cold Adelaide Hills vintage. Where the regular blend carries the patina of flavours and texture associated with barrel fermentation and maturation (a serious wine, so to speak), white label delivers the razzledazzle of early-picked grapes, captured through fermentation in stainless steel. But barrel fermentation of a portion of the blend adds subtly to the wines texture without taking the focus away from the fruit. This is a delicious drink now style. Winemaker Andrew Hardy

Andrew began with Petaluma in 1982, working and studying his wayup through the ranks as cellar hand, trainee winemaker and finally leadwinemaker. Successfully interweaving practical, ‘in the vineyard’ workwith university studies, Andrew completed his Bachelor of Appl. Sci(Wine Science) at University of Adelaide in 1990. Nominated in August1999 as a finalist in AGT Wine Magazine's Winemaker of the Year award, Andrew is highly respected for his effortless winemaking style,restrained hand in the winery and engaging manner.
