Expert Reviews

Good crimson-purple; an elegant, medium-bodied wine, with a harmonious fusion od blackberry, cherry and spice fruit, its sojourn of 18 months in 20% new French and American oak judged to perfection. Easy to drink now, but with the option of extended ageing. James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2013, July 2012

There's some slick, chewy tannin propping up the medium bodied frame of the wine, but the core of fruit is intense, deep and shows the spice and concentration of Xmas cake richness. Oak makes a mark, but the resiny, spicy wood is absorbed by fruit through the close. Well built.Mike Bennie, WBM National, 1st July 2012

I have to admire that with all the Katnook releases the alcohol levels have remained around the 13.5% mark. There’s a similarity in oak treatment that lends a note of creamy vanilla influence that’s evident in this and the Merlot. It shows plum and mulberry with seasoned wood spice and the trace of the aforementioned vanillin. Its full of soft, plum fruit, some charry, earthy characters and nicely dusty tannins before a trace of spice and a persistent length. Good example of Coonawarra Shiraz.Patrick Haddock, Wining Pom, 1st December 2011

A very flavoursome and complex wine with a massive amount of oak and lovely earthy, savoury notes. Still very fresh. Winestate, October 2012

Winery Tasting Notes

Very deep dark plum reds with bright purple tinges.

Attractive raspberry fruit highlighted by subtle sweet oak maturation notes. Intricate levels of complexity with light licorice, spicy plum and black pepper enhanced by the vanillin and chocolaty oak aromas.

Richly layered with ripe fruit, complex spice and oak. Appealing raspberry and plum fruit with underlying licorice and sweet spices are combined with vanilla and chocolaty oak maturation notes. Fine grained tannins enhance the lingering savoury fruit flavours.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Katnook Estate is one of the premier wineries in Australia's pre eminent red wine district, Coonawarra. Katnook Estate wines are made from select grapes grown in distinguished sites within the company's 330 hectares of Coonawarra vineyards.

Since 1980,  senior winemaker, Wayne Stehbens has crafted Katnook Estate wines and more recently, the iconic Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon and Prodigy Shiraz.

The Coonawarra wine region, Australia's "other red centre" is recognised world wide as producing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as stylish Shiraz, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Currently, over 5500 hectares are under vine in Coonawarra - with Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz accounting for 80% of plantings. 25% of wine produced in Coonawarra is exported.

The wines are shaped by the extraordinary terroir of Coonawarra - where the fabled Terra Rossa soils and cool maritime climate create the perfect wine grape growing environment.

Coonawarra's is famous for its prized Terra Rossa ( "Red Earth") soil. This rich, friable red loam vary from a few centimetres to a metre in depth and lie over a thin layer of calcareous matter, which in turn overlays a deep stratum of limestone. The cigar-shaped strip of Terra Rossa soil is only 12 km long and 2 km wide.

Coonawarra appears completely flat, but in fact the red soil is situated on a slight but all important limestone ridge. The Terra Rossa soils are considered the best in the world for growing Cabernet Sauvignon.

Coonawarra is a cool wine region, with similar climatic conditions to Bordeaux, France. Both areas experience long but cool hours of sunshine during grape ripening - encouraging intense flavours balanced by good, natural acid.
