Expert Reviews

One of the best names in Coonawarra cabernet and one of the finest examples of a great year for cabernet. Immensely powerful, yet with typical Coonawarra ffnesse and elegance. Deep and rich, with lavish texture coming from the ripe fruit and predominantly French oak with a little dab of American. Will handle extended cellaring Rating 96 - Ray Jordan, The Weekend West, 23 March 2013

From an excellent Coonawarra vintage, this red shows blackcurrant, mulberry and cassis characters, with some toasty oak and fine persistent tannins on the finish. You could try it now with roast leg of lamb, but it deserves at least another five years in the cellar and will probably be at its peak in about 10 years. $40. It should be in most fine wine outlets. Rating: 94 - Mike Frost, Courier Mail, 22 February 2013

Mixed berries, mint, nuts and coconut/nougat/coffee oak, and while apparently only 10% of it is new, it sits up quite prominently. It’s medium bodied and fresh, with fine grained tannins and a pretty good finish. Rating 90 Points, Drink : 2014 - 2020 Gary Walsh, The Winefront, 17 January 2013

ONE TO NOTE: Katnook Estate's 2010 Coonawarra cabernet sauvignon is a wine richly reflective of the great 2010 vintage, one that's often described as being among the region's best-ever, with near-ideal weather conditions that included below average rainfall and above average temperatures. The beautifully intense blackberry and mulberry aromas, generous pure-fruit flavours, finely grained tannins and faint mocha notes make it a great buy; David Ellis, St George and Sutherland Shire Leader, 21 February 2013

Katnook Estate, Coonawarra’s second largest vineyard owner after Treasury Wine Estates, is part of Wingara Wine Group, owned by Spain’s Freixinet. Despite changes of ownership, however, Wayne Stehbens remains winemaker after 30-odd years. In 2010 he made the best cabernet I’ve seen from the estate in several years. It’s Coonawarra cabernet as it should be – fully ripe, with precise, black-olive varietal aromas and ?avours and suf?cient ?esh on the mid-palate to carry the ?rm but ?ne tannins inherent to the variety. It should drink well over the next 10 years.Chris Shanahan, Canberra Times, 13 March 2013

A good wine, this. It’s from one of Coonawarra’s leading producers and from what is regarded as a very strong vintage, so all the pointers are good.It has deep blackcurrant flavours that are enhanced by some plummy complexity. There’s also some layered flavours that play a supporting role, the trademark Coonawarra mint, and some toasty characters from the oak. It’s a good drink, but if you’re prepared to cellar, you’ll be handsomely rewarded.Rick Allen, Manly Daily, 12 April 2013

Winery Tasting Notes

Deep, very dark plum with purple tinged edges.

A complex array of ripe fruit and sweet oak maturation aromas. Dark plums, light mulberry and cassis combine with subtle sweet vanilla and hints of chocolate.

A richly layered palate of dark berry fruits and subtle oak maturation flavours of mocha and spice. Dark plum and blackcurrant fruit highlight the generous palate, combined with delicate oak flavours and chocolate notes. Fine lingering tannins lead to a rewarding finish.

Cellaring Potential

8 – 12 years.

Food Matching

An aged porterhouse cut served with potato galette and wild mushrooms, finished with a rich reduction would be an ageless accompaniment to this regal variety, Cabernet Sauvignon.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Katnook Estate is one of the premier wineries in Australia's pre eminent red wine district, Coonawarra. Katnook Estate wines are made from select grapes grown in distinguished sites within the company's 330 hectares of Coonawarra vineyards.

Since 1980,  senior winemaker, Wayne Stehbens has crafted Katnook Estate wines and more recently, the iconic Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon and Prodigy Shiraz.

The Coonawarra wine region, Australia's "other red centre" is recognised world wide as producing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as stylish Shiraz, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Currently, over 5500 hectares are under vine in Coonawarra - with Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz accounting for 80% of plantings. 25% of wine produced in Coonawarra is exported.

The wines are shaped by the extraordinary terroir of Coonawarra - where the fabled Terra Rossa soils and cool maritime climate create the perfect wine grape growing environment.

Coonawarra's is famous for its prized Terra Rossa ( "Red Earth") soil. This rich, friable red loam vary from a few centimetres to a metre in depth and lie over a thin layer of calcareous matter, which in turn overlays a deep stratum of limestone. The cigar-shaped strip of Terra Rossa soil is only 12 km long and 2 km wide.

Coonawarra appears completely flat, but in fact the red soil is situated on a slight but all important limestone ridge. The Terra Rossa soils are considered the best in the world for growing Cabernet Sauvignon.

Coonawarra is a cool wine region, with similar climatic conditions to Bordeaux, France. Both areas experience long but cool hours of sunshine during grape ripening - encouraging intense flavours balanced by good, natural acid.
