Overview

The grapes for this wine were selected from our 40 year old vines growing on our volcanic “Fordwich Sill” vineyards of Broke Fordwich. This vineyard produces wines of a richer softer style with intense citrus like flavours. Handpicked and single vineyard. The juice was fermented under temperature controlled conditions to maintain all of its fruit characters. True to Hunter tradition, no oak is used.

Expert Reviews

Estate-grown, 40+yo vines produce this wine, making the price a mockery. It has a typical regional medley of citrus zest, herb, lemongrass and mineral-like flavours, with a bone dry finish. Joins Chateau Francois as the great steal of wines bred for 10 years minimum cellaring. Rating 93 – Drink by 2029, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (SEPT/2014).

Rating 88 Honey, lime, juicy, toasty, a bit coarse, loose, decent flavour, nice to drink as a young wine. Some sweetness, but not bad. Rating 88 – Drink by 2015 – 2020, Gary Walsh, winefront.com.au (SEPT/2014).

Andrew and wife Lisa Margan established Margan in 1997 in the beautiful Broke Fordwich sub region of the Hunter Valley. The brand has grown to include 250 acres of vineyard, a state of the art winery and a beautiful tasting room and restaurant. Winemaker Andrew Margan handcrafts an exceptional range of single vineyard wines – all estate grown on the ancient red volcanic soils of the Fordwich Sill.
