Katnook Prodigy Shiraz is one of the Estate's iconic wines, the other being Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2010, Prodigy was added to the prestigious Langton's Classification V in the "excellent" category. Langton's describe Prodigy as "a plush dense wine with lovely roasted coffee aromas, supple sweet chocolaty tannins and balanced rather than full-on new oak.”

Katnook Estate Prodigy Shiraz was first produced from young vines in 1997 and won the prestigious Jimmy Watson Trophy at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show in 1998. It has since become a favourite among wine collectors. The fruit is predominantly drawn from a single vineyard plot planted on classic terra rossa over limestone soils. Viticulture is highly detailed with precise canopy management, including crop reduction to optimise flavour intensity and ripeness. Organic principles are increasingly followed.

Expert Reviews

Preliminary maturation for 13 months in 50/50 American and French barriques (75% new), then a blended barrel selection spent a further 20 months in new and used French and American oak, no percentage specified. Good colour; obviously, an auto da fé of oak, but the quality and concentration of the fruit has not been vanquished. An inimitable style. Rating 94 - Drink by 2029 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (SEP/2013)

Big, powerful wine that is probably at its peak. Nicely aged fruit with chocolaty overtones but still surprisingly youthful. Winestate, 1 December 2013

Odyssesy Cabernet Sauvignon and Prodigy Shiraz mixing power with indulgence. An excellent wine in its category - one especially worth seeking out. Oz Clarke, Poket Wine Book 2013

Winery Tasting Notes

Deep plum with crimson and purple hues.

A rich and complex array of fruit, oak and subtle maturation aromas. Attractive raspberry and plum fruit with subtle liquorice, vanilla and light toast adding complexity to the fruit aromas.

A richly layered palate structure with generous fruit, oak and maturation flavours seamlessly combined. Raspberry and plum fruit with sweet spices of liquorice and light pepper are a feature. Subtle oak with fine lingering tannins are in harmony with the well-rounded palate structure.

Cellaring Potential

Suggested cellaring – medium to long term (10-20 years).

Food Matching

The rich flavours of Prodigy will beautifully suit an oven-baked quail or dukkah crusted tuna steak served aside ratatouille and greens. Also the perfect accompaniment to a selection of hard cheeses with brioche, paté and plum paste.

Medals & Trophies

Silver Outstanding Medal winner - International Wine & Spirit Competition 2013 "Velvety, strong and exotic, this wine opens up on the palate to give a powerful yet elegant black fruit sensation and fine expression of the Syrah grape. Passion in a glass."

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Katnook Estate is one of the premier wineries in Australia's pre eminent red wine district, Coonawarra. Katnook Estate wines are made from select grapes grown in distinguished sites within the company's 330 hectares of Coonawarra vineyards.

Since 1980,  senior winemaker, Wayne Stehbens has crafted Katnook Estate wines and more recently, the iconic Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon and Prodigy Shiraz.

The Coonawarra wine region, Australia's "other red centre" is recognised world wide as producing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as stylish Shiraz, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Currently, over 5500 hectares are under vine in Coonawarra - with Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz accounting for 80% of plantings. 25% of wine produced in Coonawarra is exported.

The wines are shaped by the extraordinary terroir of Coonawarra - where the fabled Terra Rossa soils and cool maritime climate create the perfect wine grape growing environment.

Coonawarra's is famous for its prized Terra Rossa ( "Red Earth") soil. This rich, friable red loam vary from a few centimetres to a metre in depth and lie over a thin layer of calcareous matter, which in turn overlays a deep stratum of limestone. The cigar-shaped strip of Terra Rossa soil is only 12 km long and 2 km wide.

Coonawarra appears completely flat, but in fact the red soil is situated on a slight but all important limestone ridge. The Terra Rossa soils are considered the best in the world for growing Cabernet Sauvignon.

Coonawarra is a cool wine region, with similar climatic conditions to Bordeaux, France. Both areas experience long but cool hours of sunshine during grape ripening - encouraging intense flavours balanced by good, natural acid.
