This is an awesome and powerful statement of Coonawarra shiraz. Winemaker Wayne Stehbens chooses the best fruit from individual parcels and matures it in a mix of largely new French and American oak over at least 26 months. Such is the intensity of the fruit that it absorbs all the oak with ease. The flavour of dark fruit, spices and a touch of licorice and mocha is intense and complex. One for the cellar. Perfect with pan-fried venison
Rating 95 -Ray Jordan, The West Australian, 19th November 2011
This is the 10th release of Katnook Estate Prodigy shiraz. It spends 26 months in a mix of French and American oak, about half of which is new. Full-bodied and rich but this 2008 is remarkably spritely. It tastes of liqueured cherries, plums, toasty/smoky oak and bourbon. Those descriptors probably make it sound heavy, but the flavours remain fresh and lively, despite their intensity. Fresh acidity to finish. Soft, melted-in tannin. Faultless in the big, rich fashion. Rating 94 - Campbell Mattinson, Winefront Monthly (23/OCT/2011)
"Savoury / spicy black fruits"
Deep purple-crimson, relatively speaking more elegant than some of its predecessors, 26 months in predominantly French and American oak barrels woven into the quite savoury / spicy black fruits and the extended finish. Drink to 2020: Rating 94 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (OCT/2011)
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2008 Prodigy Shiraz offers complex layers of blackcurrant cordial, dried mulberry and blueberry preserves aromas over salami, licorice, espresso and vanilla. Concentrated on the full bodied palate, it has a medium to firm level of grainy tannins, lively acid and a long spicy finish. Approachable now, it should cellar to 2020+.Rating91+ - Lisa Perrotti Brown, Wine Advocate US (Robert Parker), April 2012
Deep colour. Intense blackberry/ vanilla/ malt aromas with boysenberry notes. Generous fruit sweet boysenberry/ red currant/ malty/ vanillin flavours. Finishes firm and long. Andrew Caillard MW, Langton's website, August 2011
Winery Tasting Notes
Deep dark plum with crimson and purple hints.
A rich and complex array of fruit, oak and subtle maturationaromas. Attractive ripe raspberry and plum fruit with subtle licorice spice tones. Sweet vanillin and subtle light toast adds complexity to the fruit aromas.
A richly layered palate structure with ripe fruit, oak and maturation flavours seamlessly combined. Raspberry and plum fruit with sweet spices of licorice and light lingering pepper are a feature. Subtle oak with fine lingering tannins are in harmony with the palate structure.
The rich flavours of Prodigy will beautifully suit an oven-baked quail or dukkah crusted tuna steak served aside a rich ratatouille and greens. Also the perfect accompaniment to a selection of rich cheeses with brioche, paté and plum paste.
