Overview

The concentrated and powerful Odyssey is selected from the most outstanding parcels of intense Cabernet fruit, from specific vineyard rows planted on rich clay terra rossa loams over a thick hard layer of limestone. After vinification in small batch fermenters, maturation takes place over approximately 36 to 40 months in a combination of new French and new American barriques. Some parcels are “double oaked” to increase flavour complexity.

Expert Reviews

Highly concentrated and powerful interpretation of Coonawarra Cabernet, A two-stage oak maturation process, where the wine is racked to additional new oak, increased the new oak influence. This has been matured for almost three years in French and American oak. The intense fruit, with its precise lines, provides a wine of great length and focus. It will cellar for many years. 96 points - Ray Jordan, The West Australian, 26th November 2011 PICK OF THE WEEK

Odyssey cabernet sauvignon is typically at the bigger end of the Coonawarra cabernet style spectrum. This 2008 release is the perfect case in point. It could easily pass as a beefy-but-dusty shiraz. It tastes of blackcurrant and beef stock, smoky-sawdusty oak and cloves. The fruit lacks a bit of definition but it sure packs a punch. Warm, spicy, brandied finish. Integrated tannin. I wouldn’t doubt its cellaring potential. Rating 93 - Campbell Mattinson, www.winefront.com.au(21/OCT/2011)

Has been accorded the full Odyssey treatment, matured for 34 months in a mixture of French and American barriques, 70 percent new. A full bodied wine, with abundant blackcurrant and mulberry fruit, and tannins that have not been silenced by protracted barrel ageing. 5 stars.James Halliday, The Wine Companion , May / June 2012

Deep garnet colored with a hint of purple, the 2008 Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon presents warm berry notes of crème de cassis and fruits of the forest compote with underlying hints of dried plums, Chinese five spice and cedar. Full bodied and with a generous amount of dried berry and spice flavors, it has a medium to high level of chewy tannins, refreshing acid and a long finish. Drink it not to 2020+. Rating 90 - Lisa Perrotti Brown, The Wine Advocate US (Robert Parker), April 2012

Highly decorated Coonawarra cabernet that oozes class. Opulent and textured, plush and powerful, lashings of plum and black fruit, choc-mint characters, 26 months in French and American oak, all in perfect harmony, velvet smooth tannins.Kerry Skinner, Illawarra Mercury (15/OCT/2011)

Winery Profile

Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon was first released in 1996 from the 1991 vintage - to celebrate the centenary of the first vintage in Katnook's woolshed. Odyssey defines quintessential Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, produced from the region's distinctive terra rossa soils and crafted with the luxury of great attention to detail.

This multi-award winning wine has a string of international trophies to its name including Best Australian Red and the Frescobaldi Trophy for Best Vintage Red Wine, awarded twice, at the 2003 UK International Wine & Spirit Competition for the 1998 Odyssey.

Odyssey also boasts gold medals for both the 2000 and 2001 vintages in the Decanter World Wine Awards for 2005 and 2006 and classified for the 'Outstanding' category in the prestigious Langton's Classification V 2010.

Winemaker, Wayne Stehbens, describes the overall style as “a wine with ripe, rich fruit combined with complex oak and barrel matured flavours.” This highly prized Coonawarra wine is a benchmark style with beautifully intense, pure, blackcurrant aromas, mocha oak complexity, superb volume and dense chocolaty tannins. Odyssey is the essence of Coonawarra style, with remarkable balance and minerality. It has established proven cellaring potential and has a very keen secondary market following.
