As St Hallett’s reserve Shiraz, Blackwell is big and bold. It exudes all the power and brooding density that the Barossa has to offer in Shiraz.

The fruit is picked at full ripeness to gain optimum power and concentration of fruit flavour and a dense, inky colour. Each parcel of Shiraz is individually matched to one of a selection of American oak barrels in which the wine spends two years maturing and gaining considerable texture and power prior to release.

Expert Reviews

"Named in honour of long-serving chief winemaker Stuart Blackwell, this is less than half the price of the top St Hallett shiraz, Old Block, but lacks little in comparison. Dense, dark, red-purple in colour, it has slight reductive, sweet, almost jammy fruit on the bouquet, with some savoury earthiness. It’s rich and deep on the palate, with plenty of fleshiness and density, but also elegance and grace, with no excesses of oak, alcohol or ripeness. Good concentration and a long, long aftertaste. Another brilliant 2010 wine, lovely to drink now with long-term cellaring potential. "

Rating 95 - Herald, Huon Hooke, Sydney Morning 09 Oct 12

"Deep colour, vivid purple hue; densely packed black fruits with a touch of fresh sage and mocha; the density is palpable on the palate, with the toasty oak weaving seamlessly in amongst the fruit; big, lavish and friendly and warm, if this wine could cuddle you, it probably would."

Rating 94 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2013

Winery Tasting Notes

Dense, inky, dark red, with purple hues.

There are layers of intense dark fruits and notes of licorice. The power of the fruit is clearly evident on the nose.

The palate is full bodied and concentrated. The fruit characters are layered and dark with mulberry and blackcurrant. As the wine opens, velvety chocolate characters emerge and build, with integrated rolling tannins providing textural interest and structure.

Cellaring Potential

Those with the patience to cellar for eight to 15 years in the right conditions will be rewarded.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

In the heart of the Barossa Valley, Australia’s best known wine region, lies St Hallett, one of the country’s premier wine producers. Established by the Lindner Family in 1944, for many years St Hallett’s winemaking focus was, like many local wineries, on producing fortified wines. However during the seventies and eighties St Hallett turned to explore the true potential of the Barossa through premium table wines. This has resulted in St Hallett’s elevation as one of Australia’s best producers.

St Hallett is renowned for crafting full-flavored, textured wines entirely from Barossa Valley fruit and is credited with producing benchmark wines of the region such as the iconic St Hallett Old Block Shiraz, made from vines aged up to 100 years old.
