Expert Reviews

"Homage is one of Hawkes Bays star turns at every vintage and 2009 is no exception. This is a big, intense and very rich wine with ripe fruit, some black pepper and strong spicy oak flavours. The texture is even more appealing. It is mouth-filling and reasonably soft with support from fine, ripe tannins. Great now but will age well. " Rating 98 - Bob Campbell MW, Australian Gourmet Traveller Magazine (01/SEP/2011)

This ‘Homage’ is considered amongst one of New Zealand’s most collectable cult wines – in a crude sense this is the Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier of Kiwiland. It’s also one of the few New Zealand wines sold in the en primeur fashion, such is the frenzy for when the wine is produced (only in exceptional vintages). It’s a Gimblett Gravels’ Syrah but I believe Viognier may find its way into the blend. A hyper-fragrant bouquet showing an array of exotica – earth, musk, licorice and flinty/wet stone characters mingle with wild, brambly raspberry and whiffs of cola. Flavours cascade in the palate; they work from high notes of small red berry fruit to vanilla sticks, pomegranate, black cherry elixir and cinnamon. Layers of silken texture fall lightly; there is no cloy in this wine. It’s effortlessly concentrated, close to the definition of finesse and profoundly long in the mouth, yet a lick of acidity is the nudge-and-wink of further longevity. Very beautiful.

Rating 96- Mike Nennie, www.winefront.com.au (17/JUL/2011)

A beautifully expressive and stunning New Zealand syrah with a touch of viognier, this shows great balance and sophistication. The fragrant, elegant red cherry aromas are lifted by dried spice and followed by a fleshy, dry palate, marked by pure, concentrated fruit and finishing with silky tannins and extraordinary length. Altogether a real superstar in the making.Angus Hughson, Australian (5/AUG/2011)

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

The colour is a deep, vibrant crimson.

Aroma/Palate

Blackberry, black pepper, savoury and spice elements are prominent, with meaty overtones. The Viognier has added a lifted aromatic quality and softened the tannins, making the wine more feminine. Multi-layered complexity is the aim.

Powerful, but ripe and round tannins give the wine great structure. Oak aging plays a minor part and the wine lives on its fruit. Combined with the good acidity, these characteristics mean excellent aging potential. Development of mineral, earthy and tarry characters are likely during bottle aging, resulting in a wine that is in Northern Rhone-like rather than resembling any thing Australian.

Cellaring Potential

We would expect this wine to age 4-6 years plus with good cellaring conditions.

Food Matching

Great with any red meat, but especially game such as venison.
