Wither Hills Wairau Valley at its best!- gorgeous scent and unctuous texture.

In complete contrast to the 2012 vintage, 2013 saw the region soaked with sunshine and warmth throughout the growing season, after a settled spring, which allowed for fabulous fruit set and healthy growing conditions. As the sunshine continued, ripening progressed at an even rate across the valley floor, so much so that many varieties and sub regions looked to have reached physiological ripeness at once! Two weeks of intense harvesting and work within the winery meant that fruit was captured in optimum condition. The resulting wines are showing intense fruit aromatics and seductive juicy palate weight.

Winery Tasting Notes

This 2013 Wither Hills Pinot Gris is intensely layered with aromas of honeysuckle, spicy apple strudel, Beurre Bosc pear, and orange blossom leaping from the glass, followed by subtle layers of gorgeous exotic rock melon, papaya, and guava and a dollop of cinnamon-infused mascarpone.

Dry in style, this refreshingly vibrant wine delivers a beautifully succulent mouth feel, balanced by a thread of refined spicy pear skin phenolics for a long and textural finish.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Established in 1994, with vineyards strategically sited throughout Marlborough’s Wairau Valley, Wither Hills has always been dedicated to the philosophy that exceptional wines are ‘created in the vineyard’.

Named after the southern landmark range of Wither Hills that border our vineyards, our focused, hands on approach to winegrowing allows us to make a range of wines that reflect our passion for the ‘place where we stand’.

Winemaker Ben Glover

Ben Glover grew up among the vineyards of Marlborough and has worked at Wither Hills since its establishment almost ten years ago. In April 2007, he was appointed Chief Winemaker for the winery providing him with the opportunity to lead the award-winning winemaking team at Wither Hills.

He has a wealth of wine growing and winemaking experience across New Zealand and has worked internationally in Sonoma in California, Margaret River in Western Australia, Burgundy in France, and Puglia in Italy.

His particular passion is Pinot Noir, and the international accolades earned for the Wither Hills Pinot Noir are a reflection of Ben’s devotion to his craft.

His selection as the New Zealand representative scholar for the inaugural Len Evans tutorial in 2001 and his extensive experience as an international wine judge are testaments to his dedication to quality wine – both winemaker and as an appreciative wine drinker.

Ben has a Commerce Degree from Canterbury University and a Post Graduate degree in viticulture & oenology from Lincoln University.
