Expert Reviews

What impresses me most about Arras mastermind Ed Carr is that in spite of his clear talent and success, he’s always listening, forever learning, and constantly refining his craft. I’ve found his style a little sweet at times, but this is changing, and his 2005 comes in at a low 7.1g/L of dosage, a gram or two lower than in the past. He’s employing more oak in the liqueur to provide dry tannins that stand in for sugar to balance the palate. His 2005 is a release that impresses me for juxtaposing the lively, focused citrus drive of chardonnay (69%) with the succulent red berries of pinot noir. The result is clean, precise and beautifully pure, quite backward in its development, with subtle toasty, spicy brioche and roast nut development just beginning to materialise. Long lees ageing has built a creamy, softly textural mouth feel and a long finish of impressive acid drive. Rating 94 - Drink to 2017 - Tyson Stelzer,

A great vintage for Arras, testimony to maker Ed Carr's perpetual learning curve. Less dosage sweetness accents youthful fruit purity, while a touch more oak in the liqueur conspires with long lees ageing to build creamy, softly textural mouthfeel. The citrus drive of chardonnay (69%) takes the lead, backed by the flesh of pinot noir (31%). Rating 94 - Drink by 2017, TS - Wine Companion (JAN/2014)

Winery Tasting Notes

The appearance of the Grand Vintage is crystal clear with an ultrafine and persistent bead.

An intrigung aroma reminiscent of sauteed mushroom, toast, exotic spice and sea brine.

An immensely complex melange of flavours including buttered toast, truffle, candle wax and lemon curd. This elegantly structured wine has an impeccable balance of natural acidity, sugars and tannins. The palte has superb poise and intense flavour persistence.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

For more than a decade, the House of Arras team has been identifying and developing the ideal vineyard sites for world class sparkling wine. This journey has led the House of Arras to call the ancient soils and cold climate of Tasmania home. Its climate is significantly cooler than the mainland, with long summer daylight and maritime influences, which are Ideal conditions for long, slow and consistent fruit development. The House of Arras sources fruit from many outstanding vineyards in southern Tasmania and the south east coast. Each location bestows its own nuances of character on chardonnay and pinot noir fruit.

Winemaker Ed Carr

Ed Carr, House of Arras master winemaker, is Australia’s most awarded sparkling winemaker. He has long held the belief that Tasmania can, and should, produce exceptional sparkling wines equal to the world's best. Over the past 20 years Ed Carr has amassed more than 100 trophies in Australian wine shows including 21 consecutive "Best Sparkling White Wine of Show" trophies at capital city wine shows. However, a world class sparkling wine can only be crafted with the finest fruit and the House of Arras viticultural team carefully nurtures the House of Arras vineyards through the vagaries of each and every growing season. Only the very best parcels of Tasmanian chardonnay and pinot noir are selected for House of Arras, carefully handled in separate batches and made into wine each vintage before being blended and left to mature and develop their own special nuances over many years.

Art of Blending

The art of blending sparkling wine is one that can only be mastered with years of experience. Many individual parcels are woven together to create the final blend, each bringing its own profound character to the complete wine. The world's leading sparkling wines require time to develop complexity and character. Part of Ed Carr's long term vision for the House of Arras was to release a single vintage wine with a minimum of 8 years tirage age. This vision is now realised as the House of Arras takes the next step in its journey.
