Expert Reviews

"Strong pear and quince fruit flavours plus a fresh brioche character. A bold pinot gris that gains extra weight, warmth and a silken texture from a generous level of alcohol. An off/dry style with a pleasantly dry finish." - Bob Campbell MW, Qantas Inflight Guide to Wine - 5th Edition, May 2009

The 2008 Wither Hills Marlborough Pinot Gris shows benchmark varietal characteristics, it is dry in style with lovelly peach, honeysuckle, and pear, aromatics.

The palate is extraordinarily balanced with smooth spicy pear flavours, sweet phenolics, a lush palate and glorious balance. A wine of remarkable intensity.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Established in 1994, with vineyards strategically sited throughout Marlborough’s Wairau Valley, Wither Hills has always been dedicated to the philosophy that exceptional wines are ‘created in the vineyard’.

Named after the southern landmark range of Wither Hills that border our vineyards, our focused, hands on approach to winegrowing allows us to make a range of wines that reflect our passion for the ‘place where we stand’.

Winemaker Ben Glover

Ben Glover grew up among the vineyards of Marlborough and has worked at Wither Hills since its establishment almost ten years ago. In April 2007, he was appointed Chief Winemaker for the winery providing him with the opportunity to lead the award-winning winemaking team at Wither Hills.

He has a wealth of wine growing and winemaking experience across New Zealand and has worked internationally in Sonoma in California, Margaret River in Western Australia, Burgundy in France, and Puglia in Italy.

His particular passion is Pinot Noir, and the international accolades earned for the Wither Hills Pinot Noir are a reflection of Ben’s devotion to his craft.

His selection as the New Zealand representative scholar for the inaugural Len Evans tutorial in 2001 and his extensive experience as an international wine judge are testaments to his dedication to quality wine – both winemaker and as an appreciative wine drinker.

Ben has a Commerce Degree from Canterbury University and a Post Graduate degree in viticulture & oenology from Lincoln University.
