2011 was the coolest growing season since 1954, including a greatly truncated Indian summer. The first 15 days of October brought some form of cold and precipitation. October 17-27 saved the day with mostly dry days and one day reached a high of 76. This late in the season, vines tend to really respond to sun and heat.

The wines turned out beautiful, perfumed, and have surprising depth and finish to them. Late season ripening seems to produce wines which leap out of the glass aromatically.

This was one of the most challenging vintages ever. We pressed off the last red wine on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving! Imagine an exhausted, motley, yet grateful harvest crew gathered around the smoked turkey on Thursday. This Thanksgiving was truly something to be grateful for!

Winery Tasting Notes

From a very cool growing season in the Willamette Valley comes a wonderful example of cool-climate grown Pinot Noir.

The wine is alive on the nose with pie cherries, blackcaps, bergamot, and pipe tobacco.

The mouth shows a lightness and grace with notes of pink peppercorn and polished leather that will keep you looking for another glass.

Prospecting the new world’s coolest latitudes Brian Croser and Rollin Soles staked a claim in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, a place ideal for late season ripened Pinot Noir fruit. Since 1987 Argyle has produced world class wines from low yielding vines on winery farmed hillside slopes.

The varying elevation of the vineyards allows the fruit to be picked progressively from lower to higher elevations as they reach their peak ripeness. Argyle farms three vineyards: Knudsen Vineyard, Stoller Vineyard and Lone Star Vineyard in the Dundee and Eola Hills in Willamette Valley, Oregon USA.

Texas native Rollin Soles has caused a positive stir amongst US wine critics and consumers alike since co-founding Argyle Winery in 1987. His reputation as one of America’s most talented winemakers continues to grow.
